I will be recieving my 996T on monday. Now ive havent scanned and years so the last time i programed on it was pretty straight forward. Now im sitting here reading the owner manual and my head hurts! I see things like systems, groups codes etc. Then there programing with the PC. Is there a methodical way to go about this or some sort of dummys guide to programing these systems.

RMH77, don't feel to bad, I'm in the same boat. I ordered a 996T last week, (still waiting for it), and I don't know a thing about it. I had them program it for me but I ordered the software and cable and hope to learn to do the programming myself. Thats what I'm doing now is looking and reading..........Good Luck with your new toy......

I'm in the same boat. Previous scanner is an AOR AR 8000.

I've had the scanner for about a week but decided right away to get the butel.nl software and pay for the premium service on Radio Reference.

Money well spent. I simply used the "internet=>radio reference" feature on the Butel software and it works fine. Makes programming super easy.

RMH,
Start by reading this. (same link Great Lakes posted)
Also, download the Uniden software once you get the scanner. It's a free download (be sure to select 'download & get the software key'). Don't rush to delete the preload systems from the software just yet. Instead, pull up a couple of them, regardless of whether they're near you or not. Take a look how at a system looks in the software vs how it shows in the database here on RadioReference.
You might also join the 996 Yahoo group for more specific posts. Search the archives if you have something puzzling you.
If you still have a specific question, ask in the Uniden forum here.

program

I have had my 996t for about 2 months and what help me learn to program is, I found a system that was already programmed into the scanner that resembled mine and then I just plugged my numbers in after awhile I changed it enough that I could do it all with my information I used uniden software.

I am sure I used Chicago that was really close to the way mine was set up.
I hope this helps.

for non trunked systems, I have mine setup as a 'System' and use each 'Group' like a Bank in on of the older scanners.

996 programming

It's not that bad once you get used to it!!
*** One suggestion is to put your location on your profile, never know when someone close to you has one (996) and willing to meet with you, or share their program !!***
GOOD LUCK !!!
