• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Are there any any systems, anywhere, currently utilizing the P-25 GPS location equipment feature that is advertised for P-25 users? I know radio manufactures are advertising that most of the mobile and portable units are GPS capable but is there any system that is this feature or any other advertised data features such as text messages, emergency light notification, fire truck pumper on, etc.

A decade ago in a previous employment I was tasked with upgrading a Motorola P-25 Phase 1 multi-site system to utilize the GPS equipment location feature of the radios. After upgrading all the radios with GPS receivers on the vehicles and GPS handheld microphones on portable radios, went to activate the features on the Motorola Consoles and discovered that the feature was never installed on the network as ordered and was going to cost $40K to get it added even though the system had been ordered with the GPS option. Anyway, the extra money needed was not in the budget and decision was made to not upgrade the P-25 phase 1 system since we would be moving to P-25 Phase 2 in a few years and it would have that feature built in on network and all mobiles and portables. Well, I visited my former employer and discovered that they are not using any GPS location for the new P-25 Phase 2 trunked system, as was intended.

Current employer is installing a new Harris P-25 Phase 2 trunked system and they also are not using any of the GPS or data services available on P-25. So, is there any P-25 system using the GPS location option?

From Wikipedia: Public safety radios have been upgraded from analog FM to digital since the 1990s because of an increased use of data on radio systems for such features as GPS location, trunking, text messaging, metering, and encryption.

Yes there are some. Harris has two options for P25, in-band and Teir II. The first is proprietary using the control channel and encoding the position with the channel request and the second opens a data call. Both require (on the infrastructure) licensing of the StatusAware server.

Thanks, do you know who they are? I am familiar with how they are designed to work, just looking to find out who, if anyone, is actually using these options.

Yes there is. The Saskatchewan P25 PPSTN is utilizing GPS location tracking of both mobile and portable radios on the network. This is a Harris phase 1 VHF system. There are both Harris and Motorola SUs on the network that send GPS messages via multi-block individual data grant messages on the voice channels. These messages are encrypted. Examples of ISP messages:
