On a WS1098, will a digital channel programmed with a NAC of F7E act as a digital carrier squelch, passing all P25 audio much like a commercial-grade radio? Does it pass the audio along with the actual NAC onto the display, as if I was in NAC Search mode, or does it just pass audio showing the F7E nac? I don't have enough P25 transmissions up here in the real northern california to get timely field data back on my testing.

I'd expect the same listening behavior just setting it in NAC Search mode, but it helps me streamline programming all my conventional channels via Excel

Forgive me if this has already been covered, searching forums didn't bring anything up, both in NAC or CT mode...:p

If I understand the question.....
Yes. I have LAPD programmed in my 1098 with a NAC of 466
The 466 appears in the display and it passes the P25 audio
Display is programmable in that you can select WHAT appears in the display.

With an analog scanner you wouldn't hear anything.

Yeah let me try rephrasing - may have asked that before the Monday caffeine kicked in.

Commercial gear, like Moto/Kenwood/BK Relm etc all respect the NAC of F7E as the digital equivalent of carrier squelch. It will open squelch on any NAC transmitted. If I put F7E as the NAC for the Whistler, will it open the squelch similarly? And if so, does it just display F7E or will it display the actual NAC?

I can get the exact same behavior from a listener's perspective by putting the channel in NAC Search mode, it'll open squelch on any NAC and display the NAC. However I program the entire conventional side of my WS1098 via Excel, and some of my data gets into the spreadsheet with F7E and I wanted to make sure the scanner would at least open squelch, or if I need to keep a sharp eye out for F7E and convert to NAC Search. I don't have enough P25 traffic in my home area to do timely testing and get the answer myself. Hoping someone else has used F7E. Hope that better explains.

Anything with a NAC of F7E will need to be reprogrammed with NAC Search. Scanners do not follow the P25 standard for special NAC or talkgroup rules. They use the search or wildcard function in place of those.

You're awesome - thank you! I'll make sure everything I want open squelch is in NAC search mode. I did one trip recently into some known P25 area but with F7E in a lot of the channels and it was noticeably a quieter trip. Almost got out to see if my antenna was still on the car. It's what got me thinking about this.
