i recently downloaded a motorola type2/p25 system from radioreference via the arch996pro software. i placed the system in the bcd996t scanner. when i unlock the system i do not hear the radio transmissions. the display will show the frequencies with "dat" behind it. does anyone know what is wrong.

My guess would be that you entered the system as a P25 system instead of a type 2 system. I don't know if you can change the type of system once it is in the scanner, but you can create a new system in ARC996PRO and copy all your data into it.

That is a very large system. Not suited for automated download. Pick the areas you want to listen to (Countys), program in the control channels and TG's you want to hear for each county. This is project 25 standered not Mot Type II. This type of statewide system is perfect for mobile use of the 996t with the GPS feature. You travel to different counties and the GPS switches systems automatically.

i originally selected the state police district i wanted and dounloaded it but still was not able to hear anything. i then selected the whole state and downloaded it but did not hear anything. the radio looked as if was receiving because it was stopping on frequencies and the signal strength meter was working. i did notice that when one of the frequencies was listed it had the letters "dat" behind it. i dont know what this means.

Was the frequency a control channel or just a frequency. I really don't know what "dat" means after a frequency either.

My 396 shows a frequency followed by DAT when it is monitoring a P25 Control Channel. If you press hold the display should show the site ID.

When someone transmits on the system, the display shows a different frequency followed by either LNK, P25, or ENC.

The P25 system I listen to has very little traffic and shows DAT more than half the time. It may be that the system in your area has not gone fully operational.

It is a Project 25 Standard, not Motorola Type II.

Starcom is a P25 only system, most is not operational yet. From your location you should use Tower325=775.33125,775.58125,775.83125....Also Tower 355=866.350,866.875, these are the data channels that should be programmed in a system site....Hope this helps, check that you hear the data channels and see at least 3-5 bars on signal graph...

i downloaded the above freq but it still will not work. i can see the system is being scanned and the scanner stops on the above frequencies and "dat" is displayed behind them but i do not hear any audio. what can i possibly be doing wrong?

Maybe you are not doing anything wrong.

Maybe there are no voice channels active on the system yet.

The fact that it stops on a frequency and shows DAT says that the 996 is listening to a Control Channel WAITING for someone to talk.

This discussion thread http://radioreference.com/forums/showthread.php?t=59548 says that not all areas are active yet. Some areas won't be active until later this year. Maybe your area is not active yet.

Until we get this figured out be sure to run in ID SEARCH mode, not ID SCAN mode (that way if there is anything to hear, you should hear it).

Not picking on you, but this bears repeating.

There is no such thing as a Motorola P25 system. There may be P25 systems using Motorola equipment, but as a system definition there is no such thing. There are Motorola Systems (Type II) that may use P25 CAI (common air interface) digital modulation, but that does not make them a P25 system. All Project 25 systems use digital CAI modulation exclusively and have nothing to do with Motorola...now if we can just get the scanner manufacturers to go along with that fact, there would be much less confusion on this issue.

I just stumbled across something that sounds like a possible answer to that question.

What I told you earlier is correct if you are scanning a Project 25 system in Trunked Mode. If you are scanning in conventional mode and land on a P25 Control Channel, it the scanner will just sit there and show DAT.

In Trunked mode it will just sit there and show DAT if there is no traffic on the system. To tell the difference, put it in hold while it is sitting on the control channel showing DAT. If it is in Trunk Mode, it should show you SID: nnnnnnn - In conventional nothing will change.
