• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

In my area we have one city which while somewhat connected to the county system it limits subscriber units to Motorola because of data/gps issues. The county tracks through lte (car laptops) and not radios. Same is true with the statewide system.
I'm guessing P25 standard is voice primarily with less guidance on data. Anyone here have experience with this issue? Can this issue be resolved so as to allow other vendors radios? I'm guessing another one of Motorola's poison pill options.

I'm guessing P25 standard….

"The nice thing about standards is that there are so many to choose from."

P25 is a standard, but it doesn't cover everything. I do believe the GPS data stuff isn't as standardized as much as it should be.
There's still a lot of gaps in the P25 standards, and they are constantly updating it.

And then there's the obvious vendor lock that happens when one vendor is chosen and the agency lets said vendor set up the system the way they want. Vendors like that since it forces purchasing their brand.
Most vendors do it at some level.
Agencies can prevent this from happening, but many don't understand, or don't care, or are happily married to the brand.

"Poison pill" vs proprietary enhancements above and beyond the standards. If you have a grudge against a particular manufacturer, you'll probably see it as a poison pill and a way for them to lock you into buying their hardware forever. If you are objective and open minded, you might see it as a way to get more bang for your buck out of the system you're spending tens of millions on. All depends on how you frame the discussion.

Those in charge of dreaming up the system are the ones responsible for making sure that either it's a fully standards based system that any subscriber meeting P25 CAP standards can operate on without restriction, or they decide that they want extra bells and whistles that comes with the downside of limiting the choice of subscribers, for certain "extra" features at least.

At the end of the day, any P25 capable subscriber regardless of manufacturer will at the very least work for voice on any P25 system, if provisioned with the correct options (TDMA, for example). The only real caveat to that would be the handful of the newer L3Harris systems that are making use of TDMA control channels, which ironically MSI does not yet support either with their ASTRO 25 infrastructure or APX subscribers. Oh wow, so L3Harris has their own "poison pill", huh?

Maybe Harris is learning how to play 'M' games...
P25 TIA does have gps in it and the APX software has a checkbox for either P25 or Motorola operation.
You can guess that the M selection rules out other vendor radios playing well with it. But the P25 checkbox will.
or at least should let others play

I lost a pretty healthy sale because a Motorola salesperson told several agencies here that they wernt sure KENWOOD gps function would work with M....I knew the truth but kept quiet....the sale went to M....but there is NO gps tracking on this system and no plans for it down the road.
Had to let them find out for themselves after spending 250k more than needed on M stuff

The reason / excuse our county uses Motorola is they have a number of laptops with CPS and cables at various sites so non OTAR changes can be done. We have the money to invest in other CPS and cables but that means change.
I brought a Kenwood dealer to an ops board meeting who said he would give each dept the cables and CPS, no dice.
