Not a P25 upgrade I'm sure. It would take both additional circuitry and firmware to accomplish 73 Mike

I saw another Uniden model that has a P25 card that can be installed. What's the deal with that one?

That is the BC785D, the 1st generation digital scanner from uniden. Its not an option or a plug in module any more, you either buy a scanner with P-25 cababilities or buy one without it. Or find a 785D with the card on e-bay. Don't forget the BC796D, basically the same as the 785D but they all came with digital capabilities.

There is going to be an awful lot of usless scanners out there in few years! It's a shame too.

Why? If someone told you that all radio transmissions will be digital in a few years, they were joking or lying.

I know, just refering to the public safety side. I'm sure that is what the vast majority of folks use scanners for.

if your wanting to upgrade the BC15 or BC15X you would need to buy the BCD996T or the BCD996XT

That's not true either, many agencies are in the process of updating radios for narrowband now and they are sticking with analog. They have no reason to dump them in a few years for no reason. Many are strongly anti-digital.

I was told that it will be law by 2013 that all public safety agencies will have to ditch the wide band.

Which doesn't mean that they will have to go to digital. Many public safety agencies are dead set against digital radio. NYC comes to mind in that regard, but there are others.

That is true. Which means nothing when it comes to digital/analog. My county is spending a million + to upgrade all radios to narrowband ANALOG. They aren't going to spend another million in a few years just for the sake of saying "let's go digital" :)

Those same radios they are buying to go narrow band will most likely be able to do P25. Has most
new radios in the Public service sector are now both analog/digital ready.

negative. just because it's a new radio, and it's narrowband doesn't mean it's digital ready.

Narrowbanding has NOTHING to do with digital.

Rebanding has NOTHING to do with digital.

Digital is 100% OPTIONAL and is 100% expensive.

sorry to hijack the thread.

I'm disappointed that Uniden won't do digital cards like the first generation of digital scanners. It makes it easier for hobbyists to expand, but alas it makes less money.

I never said that one had to do with the other. Thanks though for the information. :)

no prob, hope it didn't come off hostile, just wanted to be clear.

my point is the cost of narrowbanding is high enough, to go P25 digital on top of that is a tall bill for most jurisdictions.
