That theory doesn't really hold up around Pittsburgh though, most all usage there is UHF. My assumption was that there would be a greater concentration of users near the city and handing off to an 800 site would relieve some of the wide area VHF sites of the city traffic.

They had said early on in the process that the VHF/800 approach was being taken because of the expected difficulty in procuring VHF spectrum in more congested areas. In the meantime, they also pursued various alternatives to get enough VHF spectrum in the planned VHF areas where they may otherwise have had trouble, too, given the exclusive nature of the FB8 licensing (i.e. NTIA, maritime, FELHC, etc).

The past few times I've checked CHES31, I haven't gotten any activity (even a BSID) off 856.6375 (listed as primary control channel). All activity is on 858.6375 (listed as alternate CC). Does this system have the ability to use either as a primary CC like the Harris system in Chester County does, or is this a change worth updating in the DB?

As far as I know, The 858.6375 has always been the CC.
but yes an SCC designated ch can become the CC from time to time.. That's why they are called "Secondary Control Channel"

DSD+ creates this report:

Site: 1.68 NAC=941 BSI=WRAL397 ; CHES31 800 Pocopson/Chester

Neighbor: BEE00.942-1.69 ; CHES96 800 Oxford/Chester
Neighbor: BEE00.942-1.75 ; CHES02 800 Devault/Chester
Neighbor: BEE00.942-1.76 ; CHES01 800 Morgantown/Chester

Channel 0-561: 854.5125 BSI
Channel 0-641: 855.0125 SCC
Channel 2-640: 855.0125-1 VOICE
Channel 2-641: 855.0125-2 VOICE
Channel 0-901: 856.6375 SCC
Channel 0-1221: 858.6375 CC

The BSI is on 854.5125 32 min after each hour..
All the voice traffic has been on 855.0125, but would be seen on 856.6375 & 854.5125 when traffic warrants it.. Last time I checked (about a week ago).. (y)
So maybe the DB should reflect this? Yes..

Up to four frequencies per site can be designated as control channel capable with a Motorola ASTRO 25 system. Four are not required, that's just the limit (contrast with Harris who allow any frequency to be control capable). Technically they are classified as "Most Preferred", "Second Most Preferred" and so on. The control channels are not inclined to "roll" off of the most preferred control unless something causes it to. Since this system is still in the buildout stage, you may see them roll from time to time, but once a site is stable it should remain on the most preferred control.

Generally speaking for the 800 MHz cells, the highest frequency would likely be the most preferred control, and the lowest frequency would likely be the BSI channel.

Anyone try their luck with 168.9250?
Those wanting to "get in the game", here's a chance...
1.85 may be...
Center Valley WQVC257 LEHI05 170.1500
with a companion NTIA CC 168.9250
Makes sense to me, I actually parked on CC 168.925 for a bit today, no BSI frequency came up at :32 past the hour. Another Lehigh site (1.86) comes up as a neighbor so looks like Center Valley is accurate

The latest versions of DSD+ Fast Lane support P25 Phase II TDMA voice calls. 2.169 is the latest version, released last month.

All versions of DSD+ will decode the control channel data for a Phase II system, as does pretty much every other P25 decoding software. The control channel is the same regardless of whether the system talkgroups are FDMA or TDMA.
