I live about 10 miles west of Ely and the Pagami Creek Fire has provided some very interesting listening.

I'm hearing the US Forest Service, MN DNR, and a variety of air to air and air to ground comms. The helicopters, Forest Service aircraft, water bombers and fire detection flights are generating a lot of traffic.

Here's a list of the busiest frequencies sorted by greatest to least traffic:

123.175 Aviation - Air attack fire comms
169.925 US Forest Service linked repeaters
151.265 MN DNR - Fire detection aircraft air to ground comms
122.800 Aviation - Unicom - Ely airport
123.000 Aviation - Air to air comms over the fire
122.750 Aviation - Air to air comms over the fire
151.385 MN DNR
151.475 MN DNR Fire net
122.950 Aviation - Air to air comms over the fire
122.700 Aviation - Air to air comms over the fire
155.775 St. Louis Sheriff Tactical - Seems to be cross patched to Lake County
168.625 US Forest Service

I have a few questions:

-Are you able to decode any PL tones?

-Are you getting any P25 or is it all analog?

-Are you searching, scanning, or both?

Thank you for posting and that is a nice list of frequencies.

I'm using a BCD-396T with Freescan and a VHF 5/8 wave antenna at 25 feet. Freescan will log any PL tones that it hears but none are logged for any of the frequencies I mentioned.

It's all analog. ARMER coverage from the Ely tower site is terrible. If I drive to Ely I do hear Lake and St. Louis country Sheriff comms on the Ely tower site on TGID 38001 but here at home 10 miles west of Ely I get nothing, not even with a dedicated 850 MHz vertical antenna.

I have only been scanning. I have every published federal frequency loaded, as well as all the aviation unicom and multicom frequencies plus itinerant VHF and UHF frequencies. I'll try searching today and see what Freescan logs.

Thank you for the reply. You may want to double check your log. I would think you should be getting PL tones on some of those.

169.925 Should be 127.3 hZ

168.625 Should be 110.9 hZ

151.265 Should be 103.5 hZ

151.385 Maybe 110.9 hZ

151.475 Carrier Squelch

155.775 Probably a PL tone

When I do an FCC ULS search it looks like there are several call signs associated with that repeater output. The input frequencies look like they are 153.785 at most sites, but 153.905 shows up under another license. The 155.775 (153.905) pair might be for something else given the power levels and location. I would assume that 153.785 is the input to several repeaters transmitting on 155.775. It has also been discussed in the past on this forum

I've been searching the federal band (162.00 to 174.00 MHz) for an hour and this is what Freescan has logged so far:

Freq. Tone Count Signal strength Duration
169.925 None 33 414 0:02:30
166.6 None 6 324 0:00:47
165.2375 None 4 325 0:00:04
163.625 None 4 316 0:00:24
165.6 None 3 242 0:24:06
170.525 103.5Hz 3 640 0:00:07
163.675 None 2 639 0:00:01
163.7125 118.8Hz 2 308 0:00:01

165.2375 is US Customs, likely you are not logging P25 so that is why no TONE
163.6250 and 163.6750 are likely BP or ICE in P25
