Well, I'll tell ya: I'd give my opinion, only I'm still working my old Toshiba Tecra 780DVD and Sony VAIO FX150, so.....

No, can't say as though I've ever used a Panny laptop, so my advice wouldn't really be of much validity. Sorry. Although I will say that if their laptops are anything like their headphones and allegedly "ruggedised" pocket CD players of late, you should save yourself some bread and get a truly rugged Toshiba Tecra. It's really hard to bust those. Personally, I'm really kind of skeptical about the longevity of anything with the "Panasonic" badge within the past 10 years or so.

(Individual results may vary; past performance does not guarantee future performance. No case is typical; you should not expect to achieve these results. Must be 21 or older to call. No purchase necessary; see official rules for details. Void where prohibited. Do not taunt Happy Fun Ball.)

On the first and third items, you're asking the wrong guy. I don't recommend ANYTHING be used with XP, since Window$ in general is a bloated, insecure, buggy piece of garbage. It's a Linux world now. 802-11 is especially a problem if Window$ is present on the machine, since people who know better know not to access the modern-day Internet and World Wide Web through Window$. That's also usually the first thing I disable, if present, since the last thing I need when away from home is network access. (But that's just me.)

Good luck finding serial ports on modern equipment (if that's what you're after) since a lot of them are dropping actual ports for USB for whatever reason.
