next month, I am flying out to Pasadena MD. I plan on taking my BCD996XT scanner with me. I would like to listen to Police, Fire, and State Troopers. I will be using the scanner from my motel room with only the radio's antenna. Can anyone give me an idea of what to listen to? Is the Pasadena area mainly on Conventional or Trunked frequencies?

I really like taking the scanner along with me, when I travel. Great adventure, just listening to something new. reminds me of the 60's when I only had tuneable scanners. Scanning was so much fun then. State and County was on low band, while local police & Fire was on the 154 - 155 frequencies. Friday and Saturday nights were fantastic. I rarely go to bed, before 0200 am. I had three tunable radios and would sit there searching for " the Good stuff ". I lived close to the Illinois River, so if all was quiet I would tune to the Marine Frequencies and Marine Operators. Great listening to the Barges during the winter months when the ice was thick on the river

If you program the Anne Arundel County TRS, you will hear everything you want. The county police and fire departments, and the Maryland State Police all have talk groups on this system. The county police is digital (and a few encrypted) while the fire department and state police are analog. Your scanner will work with this system. The county is very busy, so the scanner will be active all the time....

Just load the Anne Arundel County trunk system. That will cover all three things that you want to monitor for Pasadena.

You're going to be too far away from the river to do anything with maritime stuff - however aircraft - and milair - is a hot topic around here.

Go to this site and download the latest newsletter (free - and it's a PDF)

Capitol Hill Monitors Online Newsletter Archives

and you'll see literally pages of freqs for this area (depending on the antenna you are bringing, and how high up you are will determine what you can hear...) Mike

As others have said, the Anne Arundel County 800mhz system in the database covers all Fire, Police, and Services in the county. Usually nonstop chatter on the system. It is a busy county.

Depends on where in Pasadena, I can get the marine frequencies on my BCD436HP with the factory antenna.

Might be good idea to put in the Maryland Aviation Admin system in the database. That covers all BWI Airport Operations.

AA County is very busy county and the system everyone is advising you of is quite strong. Your back of set antenna will be more than sufficient to hear all the activity. If you review the system in RR you will see all the services involved.

Depending on where you will be in the area, Howard County to the west, The Upper Maryland Eastern Shore system to the east are in range without external antenna.

Also within the county you will find both the Naval Academy and Fort Meade, as well as the MD Aviation Administration (BWI Airport). These are all on trunked digital systems the 996xt can get and you can find in the RR database under Anne Arundel County. I mention them on case you want to load up the scanner before getting here.

As far as water, the Maryland Natural Resources Police have a strong repeater in this county on 155.940 and they also have other repeaters in nearby counties. They (along with the county fire departments which have fireboats) handle incidents on the water.

Let us know if you have other questions. Being a scanner enthusiast I was initially blown away when I first moved here. Lots to listen to.

Wow - I never noticed that frequency before... I guess I cannot receive it from my home. I'll have to make sure that it's in the scanner - it should be, but then again I haven't D/Ld NRP for a long time.

I would find it hard to believe you can't receive that repeater output anywhere in AA County. It's one of many repeaters that NRP runs and 6-10 of them can be received in the county but 155.940 is the primary repeater (designated "Solley" in the database. )

Its not new by any means. I happened on it early in 2014 having stopped regularly checking VHF frequencies in this area. I pumped all the NRP frequencies into a 996xt just to see if I could hear anything. All the stuff the AA fireboats go to.... NRP is often there first...and on that repeater frequency.

Comms are always between NRP base and NRP police boat. They (NRP & AA County) never talk to each other on either of their own frequencies. They only use the marine freqs (channel 16, 21 etc) which you usually can't hear unless you are on top of them.

I have all my antennas set to max 700-800mz and this VHF frequency booms in where I am. I receive many of the others mainly for Harford, Baltimore counties and some on the northern eastern shore but much less stronger than this one.

With things all frozen up its not going to be real active now but I expect you will find its a good frequency in the future and I expect you can receive it fine when active.
