Been away from scanning for way too long and slowly trying to get back in the game. One thing I'm really confused about is the P25 Phase II (lets say Peel Police). If I have a compatible scanner and use a software such as Sentinel once I program it, would I be able to listen to at least some of the talk groups, or is everything encrypted?

I can't wrap my head around whether I need something else, or just buying a scanner and programming it would be enough.

Thanks in advance.

If this is the system your talking about any talkgroups with DE in the mode column is encrypted and you wont be able to listen to

But a good deal of the rest of Peel's system, it's fire departments, services are in the clear.
Same goes for Halton, Toronto.

Caledon OPP along with most of the OPP talkgroups are in the clear. Some of the OPP talkgroups you see like CISO and Surv are active and sometimes you might get lucky and hear stuff.

What scanner are you using? Guessing it'd be a Uniden.

Many thanks for the info guys. As sad as it sounds, I just fixed my broken BC245XLT last week, and these days just listening to ATC; its an old (very old) trunk scanner, so barely anything on it these days.

For now, just doing the research and trying to see whats latest in the market. Its been at least 14-15 years since I paid RadioWorld a visit, might do that in the next coming weeks and talk to someone in person, so much has changed since then.

The most popular are still Uniden, although like anything it's a user preference. The 436/536 units are my go to. They support all the current modes and are time tested. They work acceptably on simulcast systems although I live out side any of the major systems using simulcast. If you are in the metro area i suggest the SDS100/200 series. They handle simulcast very well.

I should mention both of these series does require a bit of a learning curve on setting them up for best operation. Sentinel downloads a good basic codeplug but if you tweak it to your wants the scanner is 100 times better. Don't let encrypted services limit your horizons.
