Is there some technical reason why every feed is like 5-10db overmodulated on a VU meter?

I don't think folks have a clue about setting audio levels for best dynamic range and headroom. Most feeds sound very noisy and distorted to me.

You really can't adjust your levels using your PC's speakers.

I use Equalizer APO to kill all the under 200hz and over 3000hz and PL tones that cause hum and such. If you don't encode it, it doesn't take up bits in the very limited mp3 stream. Nothing is worse that encoding useless high frequencies that come across as that weird metallic ringing echoing noise.

I hate that as well. It seems most of the feeds I have listened to are that way.

I've never heard of it, but I've used Equalizer APO along with the Peace Equalizer front-end to APO and it works great.
