To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Push MENU 1 1 MENU *SCAN while the squlech is open.
Don't hold *SCAN for more than 1 second like you do for memory and band scan.

For DCS it would be MENU 1 2 MENU *SCAN

The display should show R-CTCS on the top line, the CT icon flashes and it automatically scrolls through the tone frequencies on the bottom line until it finds the correct tone, then it stops searching and CT stops flashing.
What radio model and firmware version do you have?
Maybe your firmware version doesn't have tone search capability.

On the latest firmware you have to set menu 10 (R-DCS) or menu 11 (R-CTCS) to something besides OFF before CODE/TONE scanning will begin.

Menu 11 is R-CTCS.

You have to access menu 11

[MENU][1][1]

Then open menu 11 for changes

[MENU]

Then at this time you can scroll through the tones using the [^][v] arrow keys. Arrow to any value besides OFF. DO NOT PRESS [MENU] to select it. The menu must remain open.

Now quickly, before the menu times out, tap the [*SCAN] key. The cursor (black triangle) in the left status display will start flashing to indicate that the radio is searching for CTCSS tones. Now transmit with the radio that you are trying to get the tone from and you should see the radio start scanning through the CTCSS tone values.

Scratch that. Works like a charm. Ever grateful, thank you[emoji3]

Ok. I did try it on my latest radio and I noticed some differences from what I stated above.

It is the CT (or DCS) that flashes to indicate scanning, not the black triangle.

Also, it appears that for this to work, the radio must be in VFO (frequency) mode.

And lastly, you do have to select the the tone setting (anything besides OFF) by pressing [MENU]. If menu 14 is enabled you will hear "confirmed". Then you must open menu 11 again by pressing [MENU] and now you can finally initiate scanning.

Quite a bit different than how it worked when it was introduces roughly 3.5 years ago.
