Platteville police radio frequency

Hello all,
I am extremely new to the radio community and I'm looking for some guidance. I am interested in listening to the Platteville police radio frequency but have heard that they use a P25 type. I have been told that you cannot listen to them because they use a special chip in their radio and nobody can listen to them without this special chip that can only be obtained through the department.
Any thoughts?

If its just P25 any P25 scanner will work. If they have encryption in their radios then yes, that is correct.

Platteville PD uses encryption most of the time so you can't monitor them.

Thanks for the information, I stream Grant and Lafayette on broadcastify.com using a analog scanner, but was thinking about getting a digital one to pick up Platteville..but I'll pass now since you mentioned their encrypted

Last time I passed through Platteville the dispatcher was in the clear while the mobiles were encrypted.
