Good morning.

I am new to the scanner world. I have a Uniden BCD996P2 scanner. What software would be better to use programing it the ProScan or ARC XT software. I am hear atlot of good things about ProScan bit not to much about ARC XT.. Anyones help would be great. I do live in Canada so dont know if this will also make a differance.

Thanks for any information.

I use Proscan for my Unidens and Butel Arc(DV1) for my AORs. Though ARC certainly does the job the interface can be slow and a bit clunky at times. Before I start sounding like a radio ad, Proscan is the way to go. It is frequently improved upon with regular updates & its graphics user interface (GUI) is the closest to the scanner itself that you'll find

As Doc has already noted, ProScan does not support the HP-1 or HP-2. Butel (the ARC series of software) does have a package for the HP-1/=2 scanners.

I have not used it, as I find I can do whatever I need to with the Sentinel software Uniden provides. I do use ProScan for my other Uniden scanners, as it supports models both current and those from several previous generations of scanners.

I use programs from both vendors. They are like tools in the tool box. Each one takes care of the tasks I need working in unison with each other.

One tool never does the whole job - you need a collection of tools to perform a task or in radio - make the radio monitor or do what you need. While you might be able to use a Phillips head screwdriver for everything sometimes the flat head works best.

I use all three (Sentinel, ARC and ProScan). Sentinel does things others do not (firmware, master database updates). ARC and ProScan will do virtual control if you get the right versions.

I started off with ARC/Butel products and stuck with them, trying ProScan for the heck of it. I'd probably be more in favor of ProScan because it will do various models of scanners. With ARC, you may need to have different packages for different scanners. ARC XT doesn't do x36/SDS scanners, that kind of thing. ARC won't deal with older scanners, such as the 780 where ProScan does.

My only issue with ProScan is you have to be a little more technically minded when it comes to networking and remote control of the scanner. Getting a scanner on line seems to be a bit over my head and describing certain terms is beyond my knowledge. So I've been reluctant to venture down that path.
