Been trying to find an answer to this, but just want to be sure. If I buy a 5 volt power cord for the 436, will this power the radio as long as the power outlet in the car is on? I know it won't charge the batteries when the radio is on, but will it deplete the batteries if the power cord is attached to the car?.

Yes. I do this all the time and you'll be fine. Just make sure to use quality components and not the el cheepo car chargers found at the check out isle.

I routinely run mine powered by the car for 10 to 12 hours while at work, and shorter periods of time when I am in Erie looking for steelhead. No problem. The radio runs for 6-8 hours on AA batteries, so the drain on a car battery in that amount of time is not much. Unfortunately the new car shuts power off to all power outlets after a period of time. Waiting for warmer weather to install some outlets powered direct from battery
