Well, it's not really a charging question per se, but it does involve the AC adapter and the black battery holder.

If I use the AC adapter while I have the black battery holder in the scanner, this won't cause any damage to the batteries or the radio will it?

I ask because somewhere along the line I lost the yellow battery holder, and there are certain times I want / need to use the adapter, but don't want to have to take the black battery holder out of the radio every time I plug it in.

Thanks in advance for any info you can provide.

No, it will not charge the batteries if the black holder is used. The contacts are in a different position on that holder. That's why they tell you that, when using alkalines, only put them in the black holder.

If you wanna trade, I have extra yellow holders that I bought, but since I never charge inside the radio, I ended up wishing that I bought the black ones so that I could plug into the AC without charging.

That's what I was thinking, but I wanted to be sure no damage would be done to the scanner before plugging the adapter into it later this evening.

Thanks for the info, I appreciate it.

In fact, I don't use the yellow battery carrier at all in my scanner any more. I put both rechargeables and alkalines in the black carrier. I always use an external smart charger on my rechargeables. If using rechargeables, I just use them (in the black one) till they need recharging when on portable.

Do remember though, since it's easy to forget when using external power often, to run the radio alone on the rechargeables at least once a month down to their discharge point. NiMhs, for maximum life and capacity, need that.

I had owned a PRO-96 briefly and hadn't got around to buying the wall wart, so batteries were charged externally.

I used both the yellow and black holders to carry my NIMHs in my carry bag for mobile use. It was nice to be able to swap holders in mere seconds while monitoring a interesting comm.

The yellow holder has 3 contacts but black only has 2, that's why its impossible to charge with the black.
