I think I'm going to pull the trigger this weekend(with the F&F coupon) and get either of these as my first scanner. Is the 106 worth the extra $100. I know this is kind of a vaugue question, but what features does the 106 have over the 96. Keep it simple, I'm just learning.

A lot depends on what you want to do with it.
Is there a need for digital? Both will do it, but the 106 has NAC codes so you can be selective if an unwanted analog system shares a freq with a digital system you want to listen to.

Do you have LTR systems you want to monitor? PRO-96 won't do LTR.

How many freqs do you want to monitor? PRO-96 will do 500 (5500 with the V-Scanner) PRO-106 will do about 1800 (39,000 with the V-Scanner)

Warning: Personal Opinion - For the $100 difference, I'd go for the 106.

I have a PRO-2096 (base version of the 96) and it takes 4 V-Scanners for the state of Kentucky (Law Enforcement only). I have a PSR-500 (GRE version of the 106) and have the entire state in one V-Scanner (Law Enforcement, Fire and EMS). It may sound like overkill, but I travel throughout the state and it is easier to change banks that to load a different V-Scanner. Is it worth $100? To me, yes!

Digital is a must, but I wasn't sure about the other features. From the databases I don't see a lot of LTR that I want to monitor. Can you explain what a V-scanner is?

V-Scanner is like having 10 complete 'alternate' configurations for your scanner, backed up in your scanner. In the case of the Pro-96 you have 10 banks of 50 channels. Say you load all 500 channels for your home area, but you are going on a trip to (insert city here). You fire up Win96, save your current scanner configuration to V-Scanner 1 and program up a whole whack of stuff for the city you are visiting. Save that to V-Scanner 2. When you get to your destination, you load V-Scanner 2 from the menu and walla... you have everything for that area. When you get back home, reload V-Scanner 1 and you are back to normal. It's handy as can be, and FYI doesn't need to be programmed via the PC... You can do it all thru the keypad, but life is much easier the other way.

106 goes on sale tomorrow at $399.99. Another thread by Freqhunter indicates you can use the F&F bringing the 106 to $250 + tax. I just ordered a 197 so may take my ticket back for the $105 savings including drop in tax.

That kind of makes the decision a no-brainer. I'll be at the door when they open tomorrow.

Update: Got it. Walked in, asked if they had one and were taking the F&F coupons. Yes and yes. Good deal.

Except the 106 (PSR-500) has 20 alternate configurations of about 1800 freqs each. PRO-96 has 10 of 500 freqs.

ah . . . don't mean to be tedious . . . but that'll be $280 + tax to you sir ( = 0.7 * $399.99). :)

$70 off what i paid on Thursday . . . & i thought i gotta great deal. :(

A truly great unit & i'd seriously consider if they were available (which they are not, yet).
