I found an old post by AARONP on the PRO96 discussing the input voltage ratings using an AC adaptor. He mentioned the input voltage ratings of some of the internal voltage regulators. I tried to contact him about the PRO164 (if he knew) but no answer. Thought I'd start a new Thread here to see if anyone knows:

The PRO-164 manual says to use a 9V supply with at least 400 ma current load capability. I pulled out an old adapter that says "9V, 400mA". I measured it unloaded and it read 15.26V. Then I put some resistors in series to get it to about 22.5 ohms (for the 400 mA) and it read 9.2V. However, I am worried that if I run the unit without batteries (i.e. no charging current which I assume takes up the lion's share of the load), then the voltage from the adapter to the PRO-164 may be too high. Can you tell me where I can see a schematic for the PRO-164, or do you know what the regulators in that radio are rated for? Thanks.

I think you will be ok.I don't know what regulators are rated for. But if I am not mistaken the scanner will only pull the amps it needs.

Since the GRE made scanners come with a wallwart, I doubt they are well regulated, so the supply you tested is probably typical. I think it would work fine, as long as the polarity and plug match.

Thanks for the replies. I think you're right on the poor regulation. Does anyone know where someone can view the scematic for the Radio Shack PRO164 or even the GRE PSR300?
