Anyone know if the cable used for PRO96/PRO2096 can be used with the PRO197? It has a DB9 connector instead of USB and has a part# on it GE02D 8360.

Thanks,

I think that the older cables with the DB9 connector only had a mono plug on the radio end so it may not work. I think that there should be no harm in trying anyway, but you probably need a new cable with the stereo plug. The old scanners used the same wire for RS-232 send & receive, while the newer ones use seperate wires for them. They may be smart enough to compensate, but I'm not sure if they do.

Do you have the right comport setup? If not open up the device manager and should be able to find the right port. For myself with my pro 106 its comport 4. Some others may be comport 30.

I'm Clueless

What I have listed are as follows:

RIM VIRTUAL SERIAL PORT V2 (COM 3)
RIM VIRTUAL SERIAL PORT V2 (COM 4)
USB SERIAL PORT (COM 27)

Still no luck getting it to recognize. Also, does the scanner need to be on or off when connected?

I'm trying to use it with FreeScan. I also tried ARC500 with no results.

Try using this driver, under the comments column get the 2.08.24 setup executable, unplug cable before running this file, then plug the cable in.

Virtual COM Port Drivers

FreeScan won't work with that scanner, try this program:

Win500: PSR-500, PSR-600, PRO-106, PRO-197, PSR-310, PSR-410 Scanner Software for Data Management, Monitoring, and Control

And here is a Guide to help with Win500:

WIN500 - UtahRadio

Let us know if this helps...

No Luck

Did that. Plugged in the scanner, still nothing. Plugged it in off and on both, nothing. Plugged in with and without the short extra cord, still nothing.

I've plugged into the correct port. since there are no instructions as to how to use the cable, I have tried both with and without pigtail, with scanner turned both off and on. Have done the drivers, and still the computer does not recognize the scanner. It would be great if for the kind of money they charge for the cable they could also give you proper instructions on how to use it.

I still can not get it to recognize. Have even tried two different computers. Is there some trick I am missing? In worse case scenario, is there any way to program in the apco system for this area manually? I am so sick of this cable/scanner I am ready to scream. I have a 996xt and it was extremely simple to do with the computer. This thing is a giant pain in the rear.

Most of the time the advice given gets users up and running. I'm out of ideas, but maybe some else can help. Questions that might help them help you:

What operating system are you using on your computer.

You did check device manager for correct com port, correct.

Are you using Win500 or ARC500?

Driver Version

Good luck maybe someone has better ideas, sorry...

FWIW/from experience: Noticed no mention of a reboot after install. . If you did not, reboot after install and try again.

No mention of the type of computers, if laptops, verify power save settings and port status.

good luck.

dazed and confused

They are both laptops, one Toshiba (7) and one Compaq (vista). Did reboot after. The coms listed previously are what were in device manager. I may be computer illiterate, but how do u check to make sure what the com setting should be. I plugged into the same USB port that I was able to use for the 996xt (which worked easily with the FreeScan). Is there a setting somewhere in the Pro-197 which needs to be turned on to get it to be recognized? The computers do recognize the cable, but not the scanner.

The computer will Not recognize the scanner, only the com port.
There are no drivers for the scanner. The 2 easiest programs to get to work with the 197 are Win500 & PRSEdit500, just make sure You have the right com port set in the program.
Good Luck.

Thanks to everyone for their help. I finally got this thing to work. It would be great if there were a Scanner Programming for Dummies that would take you by the hand and lead you through each step. I don't know exactly what I did to get it working, but at least I got my scanner totally set up now (I'm used to the old program it yourself, and this was a process).

I do have one other question for everyone to see if anyone knows about this. I downloaded the trunking info from Radio Reference for Blount Co (3 different sites), but it only downloaded 2 frequencies for each, when the page lists 6 for each. I've also been able to hear (by manual programming) traffic on the other listed ones which don't download from RR. There are also other group numbers besides the 3 listed that I have seen when doing the search with my GRE handheld. What am I doing wrong here, and is there a way to add the additional channels/groups for this area other then doing it manually?

Only downloads the Control Channels. Red (c) are primary control channels | Blue (a) are alternate control channels

and is there a way to add the additional channels/groups for this area other then doing it manually? .

I take it you want to add additional frequencies?

Yes, ARC500 In the Object Browser go to Trunk systems, In the TSYS under Frequencies where it says double click you double click on the system you want to add frequencies and a Trunkfrequency window will open and you can type in the other frequencies. With Win500,PRSEdit500 & FreeScan I dont know but I would assume it would be similar.

There is a problem in using a standard serial RS-232 cable (the DB-9 connector) with scanners like the Pro-197. First, the cable must be wired sending the correct signals from the computer port to the correct places on the radio's port. The other problem is level. The Pro-197 has a 3.3V logic level and is what appears on the mini plug, zero to 3.3. The serial port on the computer swings both positive and negative and ranges from + and - 3 to + and - 15. An adapter using a 232 to logic conversion must be used. As understand it is a "mono" connector versus the "stereo" for the 197. An adapter would have to be used. I believe the 96/2096 is also at the 3.3V level and the real cable has an in-line conversion. A cable with adapter, wired correctly for the 197, converting serial to 3.3V logic would indeed work. You simply choose that COM port in the software. Such device converting the serial to 5V TTL logic might work but I could not guarantee reliability nor freedom from damage. I suspect the Pro-2096 cable is not appropriate on its own.
You could test a programming cable, measure the voltages present, not connected to the radio. A ordinary voltage meter however may not provide an accurate measurement due to frequency and waveform being measured.

Just one point of correction here - FreeScan doesn't work on the object oriented scanners. It still baffles me that, after all this time, folks still mess that up. Senior moment I guess...:.>>
