I'm interested in hearing some pro's & con's on the Radio Shack PRO-2054. I'm aware of it's obvious shortcomings, ie; no digital, no trunking, no alpha, no CTCSS/DCS, only 300 channels, etc. But for what it is, and for what it cost, how well does it perform?

I already have a PRO-2096, and PRO-2055. The PRO-2054 would be used primarily for monitoring local amateur radio on 2m & 70cm, and some other occasional use watching a handful of channels, or just sitting on one dedicated frequency at times.

Thanks!

BUY IT! :)

I've had mine for 3+ months now, and for the price, it's a great radio.

The audio is LOUD. It's hot on VHF. It's also hot on the VHF airband, and has 8.33 steps to boot. It does have a per channel delay and attenuator. Also has Close Call and service searches. Unfortunately it doesn't include the CB channels, but I can live without that.

I should also add that it doesn't receive much intermod. A few pager bleedovers and that's it. As you pointed out, you know it doesn't have CTCSS or alpha tags or trunking, so you know what to expect there.

Honestly, I can't think of any other time I've spent $99 on a radio and been this happy with it. Heck, or a time when I've only had to spend $99 for a radio, period.

You won't be wasting your money. What the 2054 does, it does well -- it's a basic low cost, well-built scanner, with great reception.

Bill,

I bought one for my father-in-law to use as his base scanner. He uses just the stock antenna and it performs great on VHF-High band. It receives really well. It has an ATT feature which is good for blocking any interference but other than the obvious things you stated, if you can find one fairly cheap, it would be worth it in my opinion.
