Hi all,

Just received this scanner and am using the pro-96 software. I noticed that 150 talkgroups can be programmed on each bank. Their is one frequency in Arlington Texas that has in excess of 450 talkgroups. Is it possible to receive all these talkgroups or will you have to program this frequency on another bank and put the remaining talkgroups in that bank. It would be nice somehow to include all talkgroups on 1 bank.

Let me know

Hi Mark,

The Arlington TRS is located here:
http://www.radioreference.com/apps/db/?sid=1
and there are fewer than 100 talkgroups for the entire system.
1. Are you sure this is the correct system you are trying to program?
2. Which "Pro-96 software" are you using?

Welcome to forum Mark,

I think Mark may be referring to this system. http://www.radioreference.com/apps/db/?sid=31

Yes, you will need to program them into three banks repeating the 4 red Controls in each. You should be able to weed out at least 9 talkgroups to avoid a 4th bank.

Edit: Sorry Jerri, guess I was putting my post together while you were sending yours.

The question you need to ask yourself is, do I REALLY need all 450 TG's.

That's a very good question! Who wants their scanner tied up listening to the Dog Catcher when a bank robber is being pursued on another talk-group?

I used to have the local prison frequencies/talk-groups programmed, thinking I'd be hearing all kinds of cool stuff. 99.9% of the time I would hear request for blankets, medication, food, water, etc. While I was listening to that, who knows what I missed elsewhere.

Excess Talkgroups in a Radio System

One easy solution is to program two banks the same, but put Law Enforcement in one bank and Fire/EMS in a seperate bank and close both banks. When something interesting comes on one bank, you can always turn off the other bank to reduce the distractions. For all the "extra" TG's that are left over, you probably aren't too interested in TCU's Maintanence Dept asking if that replacement steam valve for Building 12 has been delivered yet and such. (or maybe you are, I don't know) The thing is, in "closed" mode, the scanner will ignore any TG not pre-programmed. Even with just 300 TG's programmed in though I'll bet there is more to listen to than your brain can keep track of. and if you get bored, just turn on one of the banks and hit FUNC-5 to toggle the Open/Closed mode, then you can hear it all.

Truthfully though, 450 TG's on one scanner would mean you are probably going to miss about half of what is going on. RS/GRE scanners don't have the ability to prioritize TalkGroups yet. (although, that would be a wonderful feature for future models...)

Another thought is to run one of the many TRS software programs against the system in question for a few days. With 400+ TG's, there are almost certainly some groups that only get used on the 2nd Tuesday of a week in which there is a total eclipse of the moon.

And still another possiblilty is a 2nd or even 3rd scanner ("but honey-buns, this is the ONLY way I can listen to all of this stuff. That's why I HAVE to buy another scanner while they're on sale") (see my signature below)......
