I am a licensed Tech but new to the scanner world. I was gifted a Realistic Pro-39 Hyperscan and am having issues programing it. The device works, Scans through all 200 channels but there are no frequencies I can see on the window as it rapidly searches. When I attempt to input a freq, it locks up after the 1st digit is inputted. ???

Sounds like it's scanning through empty channels "000.0000 MHz". Turn the radio on, press MANUAL to stop it from scanning, then press PGM. Enter the frequency, including the decimal "." and then press ENTER to store the frequency.

Thank you. I did exactly what you said. Manual stops on a channel, the freqs are zeroed out. After pushing the PGM key no digits populate. Then as i keep trying different numbers a digit will pop in and no further digits can enter.

I watched a repair video where the battery and back were removed and “junk” was removed from affected key locations.

I am thinking that is my next move.

BTW what is the MHz range for this device?

JUST FOUND IT!
30-960MHz with specified ranges within.

Oxidized keypad contacts would make sense where the keys are not responding when pressed. Good luck with the repair, and keep us posted!

to get the idea.
hit manual
then hit 1
hit program
type in 162.55 (don't forget the decimal point)
hit enter.
might have to adjust the squelch and volume.
I disassembled the radio having removed the battery. Cleaned the contacts, cleaned the back side facing the battery where the keypad is. I can not see how to get that board off even with all the screws and knobs out. The anteana has a nut that could come off but I didn't see that would help. Also I could not get the wiring group connectors (2) off the board. I sent an email that I don't expect an answer from Tandy National Parts. The keypad only beeps on certain numbers, it is clearly defective and noted in their info:

GRE-Built Portables: Worn Out Keypads

The keypad on late model GRE-made Radio Shack portables, e.g., PRO-39 and PRO-43, can become unreliable after prolonged use. The best repair is to replace the rubber keypad instead of trying to restore contacts using chemicals. A replacement rubber keypad may be ordered inexpensively through Tandy National Parts or your local Radio Shack Store.

I don't think Tandy Corporation/Tandy National Parts exists anymore after Radio Shack went bankrupt. The Radio Shack brand still exists, but it is under new ownership and has no connection to the old Tandy/Radio Shack.

It's doubtful a parts inventory exists for any old Radio Shack products. The PRO-39 is a 1990's vintage scanner and the replacement keypads probably sold out long ago. GRE itself no longer exists.

One option would be to look for a parts radio, but it would be a roll of the dice, as there is a good chance the keypad would exhibit the same issue.

You can try contacting G&G Communications. They repair scanners and have scanner parts available for sale. You never know, they might have a replacement keypad kicking around.
