My Pro 96 has been reliable for many years, but now I get this message. I tried downloading
PRO96U12.EXE but I can't get the radio to connect to the computer (I get "receiving error message" once I find the correct port).

I've looked through all the very old posts on this, but I can't revive this scanner.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The last release for the Pro 96 is version UPG_14.exe dated February 18, 2007.

You will find though that 1.2 works the best from personal experience. and seen in some forum threads here. 1.4 is more for tuning in simulcast systems.

I have done a number of firmware updates to this model. Make certain all connections are fully seated in their connectors. Occasionally if it wont work I find especially where it connects to the scanner is that the connector was not fully in, pushing it in about a 1/16 inch works.

Of course be certain you have installed the proper driver for your cable. If you have software, see if it works with the radio, try to control it with the software. If you can, that would rule out the cable and driver being faulty.

Be sure to have radio in the update firmware mode by following the instructions in the update program fully, else it wont work.

Follow the instructions in the pdf link supplied in comment 2. Its for 1.4, but its the same procedure for 1.2

Thank you. But my preliminary problem is that I can't get the Pro 96 to connect with the computer, to allow me to update the firmware.

OK I'd say try re-installing the driver from the cd that came with your cable. Sometimes windows can install the wrong driver.

Always take a look at Connecting scanners via USB - The RadioReference Wiki

Although for my catalog number 20-546 cable, I have to leave the pigtail on for the mono connector - its the one with only one black line on the male connector to the radio.

I think the proper answer here is your results may vary depending on the system you are monitoring. Here in the Greater Cleveland area we have 4 major simulcast systems and Version 1.4 works just fine. I always assume the radio manufacture is more knowledgeable than us the users and they issued 1.4 because their testing says it is better. Maybe not but I would start with 1.4 and if not working move back to earlier versions.
