Windows 8.1 keeps trying to install (Update for windows 8.1 for x64 Based systems (KB3000850) and it keeps failing to install. Then a screen comes up saying (we couldn't complete the updates undoing changes).

I have checked the updates to see if the update is in the list so I can uninstall it from the computer, I thought windows was trying to install an update already installed but the update is not on my computer.

How can I stop windows from trying to install this update that keeps failing to install.

Any help appreciated,
Steve

There should be an option in the control panel to disable or skip that update. The option should be under system and security and then update.
If it continues you might want to call Microsoft.

NOT FIXED

I found Windows 8.1 update troubleshooter online with Google, ran it and this is what it found,

  1. Service registration is missing or corrupt - FIXED
  2. Windows update error 0x80070057(2015-18-T-08_3026A-FIXED
  3. Problems installing recent updates - FIXED
  4. Please disregard The header on this post, the Windows update troubleshooter did not fix this problem

no, when you see that update in Windows Update - right click it.

left click on "Hide Update" that will hide it from your windows install, and only when you un-hide it will it EVER see it again.

depending on how he views his C-panel in Category yes, its under System and Security, if under Large or Small icons, its directly under Windows Update.

that update was marked as "important" after it was reviewed as "Optional" however, it is HARDLY important. it is nothing more than a few performance updates rolled into a package.

it deals NOTHING with any security patches, thus should not be labeled as "Important"

ignore it, hide it and walk way from it.

I Click on settings, click on change PC settings, Click on Update and Recovery, the I click on view your update history and in the list I see (Update for windows 8.1 for x64 Based systems (KB3000850) has been installed, I go down the list and I see (Update for windows 8.1 for x64 Based systems (KB3000850) has been installed successfully 7 times ?

Now I click on settings and go to control panel, got to programs and click on Uninstall Programs. Click on uninstall programs, click on view installed updates and this is where you can uninstall (Update for windows 8.1 for x64 Based systems (KB3000850) . But the problem is the update does not show up in the list so I can not uninstall it.

If you have the system restore feature turned on you could restore your computer to a time before the update and that "should" fix the problem.

That is an option.

and anything after that particular install will be removed also. if its not in the installed list, but showing up in update history as installed something is not right.

im willing to bet the registry entry was written that it is installed, but the package actually failed. now why it says it was installed 7 times?? well beyond me.

saint, force a update check. see if that item pops up in the list again. it should not be showing in the updates ready list, if it does, the package is not installed. move to the next step below

if it does, RIGHT CLICK the entry for the update > HIDE UPDATE.

i will search for the location of the registry entries to remove the listing.

it should NOT be listed as installed 7 times. something is FUBAR.

This is where you will find the Registry Enties

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall.

MIND YOU!! DO NOT CHANGE ANYTHING YET!

the registry is the SURE FIRE way to hose your windows by mistyping a single character.

if a windows corruption exists, set some time off and run a Elevated ( administrator level ) command prompt.

the command will be sfc /scannow

System File Check

if it finds anything wrong with windows it will patch it for you with a hard coded reserve.

I tried system restore, I only had one restore point and that failed, tried chkdsk /r and it found nothing, I really don't want to re-install Windows 8 and then update to windows 8.1 and re-install all my files an software it's takes a couple of days to get the computer back to normal, any one else have any ideas, it would be appreciated.

Steve

To start a command prompt as an administrator
Click Start, click All Programs, and then click Accessories.
Right-click Command prompt, and then click Run as administrator.
If the User Account Control dialog box appears, confirm that the action it displays is what you want, and then click Continue.

Thanks so much for the information, I am just running chkdsk /r so this is going to probably take several hours, I'll let you know if it finds anything.

This is why backup is king!

I have a daily backup in place (Mac time machine) and always had a backup when using Windows. Even on my Linux laptop, btrfs file system takes snapshots on every program install and gives me the option to roll back.

Get yourself an external drive and get some backups going. Can really save your tail in a bad situation.

I can be right back where I am right now in about 10 minutes and have always had it that way.

mucho, in some cases.... even right clicking will fail to elevate properly.

best way to tell is when the CMD window opens, look at the command location.

if it says C:\USERS

it is not elevated.

sure fire and fail safe way is this:

invoke a "RUN" command. keyboard quick method is WIN+R on your keyboard and type this:

C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe then hit enter

that location is AUTOMATICALLY administrator level privilege executed without a UAC prompt even. only if you are running behind a standard/limited account does it fail.

to keep it that way, go into Accessories and right click the cmd icon, click properties, under "Shortcut" tab, click advanced, put a check box in the "Run as Administrator" box. OK back out and now it is PERMANENTLY set for Admin Execution every time
