Problems with FRS channels on Ex500

Hey guys,

I just got an ex500 and I'm trying to program in some of the FRS channels so that I can reconnect with family/friends after I get done with a job while ski patrolling.

Here's the problem i'm having:

FRS= cheesy walkie talkie

M=ex500

I can connect to the M using the FRS until the M tries to return a transmission. After that, the M will not recognize the FRS signal anymore. I can still transmit to the FRS from the M...I just can't receive signals on the M.

Settings on CPS are: Bandwidth 25kHz

Squelch type: CSQ for Tx and Rx

Options set: Tx power is high, Time out is 60 sec, Squelch setting is normal, Busy channel lockout is disabled

Signaling is Tx none rx none

Advanced: Compression type: disabled
Expansion type: Low level expansion
Emphasis Selection: De emphasis and pre emphasis

Reference frequencies are set to default for Tx and Rx.

Is there something I'm missing or forgetting to do? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Make sure the channel on the FRS radio reads channel whatever and that the smaller number is zero.

Give that a try.

Channel step should be set to 12.5khz.
Deviation should be 2.5khz.
Power should be 1-2 watts

Thanks for the responses guys. I did try switching to 12.5 but I don't see any area on CPS to switch deviation to 2.5. Still having the same issue.

I've also tried using TPL and setting the FRS radio to scan the CTCSS codes but when I turn that on I get nothing. (I've also made sure the FRS was set to 00 when the moto was in CSQ mode.)

A ham friend of mine was on the phone with me yesterday and we tried open squelch as well and the moto wouldn't accept any signal once it transmitted to the FRS once. He thinks that the moto is looking for some kind of signal packet from the FRS radio because there's a tone it sounds when it transmits. Does this sound familiar to any of you?

Also, no snow means no work yet and no ability to try out the programmed repeater just to make sure this radio is actually working properly. It appears to transmit and receive fine except for this FRS glitch.
