• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

    Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

    If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

    To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

    The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

    For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I'm trying to reprogram a vx 414 i used years ago. It was already programmed when i got it then, but have moved and want to program to the new area. I want to use it more as a scanner and pager. I have the frequencies in and all that works fine. I can't seem to figure out how the 2 tone alerting works. I cant find any programming manuals or videos. Does any one here know of how to program it right?

So I called vertex and they told me i couldn't alert with 2 tone, but I'm pretty sure know it did before. Is there a way to use the 5 tone decoder with using only 2 tones?

you get 2 pairs and possibly 2 groups per channel (depends on you system)
CE64 under Signaling -> Signalling Type -> 2 tone
Signaling -> 2 tone table and enter your 1st and 2nd pairs
Signaling -> 2 tone pretty self explanatory
Auto Reset to 15-60 sec so you hear the dispatch.
Duty - off duty is for pager use.
Secondary pair to a COMMON set of tones Pair #1 you always want alert about
CTCSS/DCS Complement I'd leave disabled.
Signaling -> 2 tone systems p

On your frequency page go to Signaling type and hit spacebar until signal appears under No select the pair you want to decode so lets say start at pair #@ (as #1 will be your secondary) next channel #3 and #1 is your secondary and so on. If you just want 1 set of tones don't check secondary, if you want the radio to stay open and not return to tone decode until you change the channel or hit a rest button uncheck auto reset.

I realize this is a bit of spoon feeding, but when I was first learning about this it helped. regards

I'm not able to edit it, but the last part should have read:
Signaling -> 2 tone systems
If you just want 1 set of tones select that pairing #2-#10, but don't check secondary, if you want the radio to stay open and not return to tone decode until you change the channel or hit a reset button uncheck auto reset.

On your frequency page go to Signaling type and hit spacebar until signal appears under No select the pair you want to decode so lets say start at pair #2 (as #1 will be your secondary) next channel #3 and #1 is your secondary and so on.

-Hopefully that makes a bit more sense.
