SDS100/SDS200: Programming Frustration

I'm programming the SDS200 either with Sentinal or ProScan. What a mess! My objective is to load records for four counties in one state. I have no need for national systems or statewide systems as they're all encrypted here in Virginia.

Sigh. Well, I do the programming, select my favorites (one for each county), turn on/off the services of interest, and get the "nothing to scan message." Apparently, the fix for that requires loading the national database. Great. This results in MD, WV and sites elsewhwere in VA that are far outside my location and of no use. Can we manage to slow scanning any more?

Yeah, I've RTFM and the easier-to-use-FM. I admit I haven't digested the 100+ page ProScan manual.

There must be an easier way!

Downloading the national database will not affect your Favorite Lists if they are setup correctly with quick keys, and you are not using the Zip Code feature. What four counties are you wanting to listen too, and what services are wanted (i.e. Police, Fire, Ems)

If you export your programming file, and zip it up, then posted here, someone can take a look at it for you.

First, you don't need to load the nationwide systems.

A few things will cause the 'nothing to scan' message:
A. If you assigned FL Quick Keys to the favorites lists then at least one of the FL Quick Keys needs to be on.
B. If you imported from the RRDB (RadioReference Database) using ProScan, ensure that you also imported the site/s near you.
C. Go into the scanner menu and go to the 1st item 'Set Scan Selection' then 'Select Lists to Monitor'. Ensure that the correct favorites list is selected.

Post your FL’s and let us take a look at them. You will get back a file with the corrections. OR… go on the Radio Reference Regional Forums group for your state. Ask if there is someone who knows the SDS100/200 scanners close to you that you can meet up with you.

You can get wrapped around the axle on a couple of things.
1. Make sure you understand the difference between conventional and trunking. (And understand trunking) If you don't - ask.
2. Understand the hierarchy of a favorite list. System then site then departments then talkgroups.
3. Everything in the database is geocoded, so you don't have to worry about loading statewide systems. Via location control and setting the global range properly, the radio will do the work for you - and only scan what is nearby.

Let Sentinel program the radio for you. All you need to do is figure out how you want your favorite lists set up, then right click, append to favorite and it does it all for you.

Thanks, everyone! I will go over your recommendations and re-watch the videos. In the meantime, here's my FL in Zip files (HPE and CSV formats). Have at it!

Looking over your list. Do you have the DMR upgrade?

Will take a while to go over it all.

Are you wanting to scan everything in the list, or do you have preferences for certain things, like only Law, Fire, EMS, you have a whole lot in the list.

I have the DMR upgrade. My main preferences are Law, Fire, EMS and Ham. I presume I can just toggle FLs on and off as desired. However, contrary to one of the videos I watched, I have to turn on Full Database under "Select Lists to Monitor" or I get the nothing to scan error. I just tried turning all lists off, then selected only three. I got the nothing to scan error. Sigh.,

Under select lists to monitor, I have Full Database and Search with Scan turned off, and only my Favorite Lists are turned on. You do not need the Full Database turned on, only your Favorite Lists need to be turned on.

I am sending you a PM to discuss this further.

  1. Location control - Have you set your location either manually or by zip code? Do you have it set to on for those favorite lists? Is your range (in profile) set properly?

  2. Service types - do you have every service type you want to monitor set to on?

  3. Profile - do you have your favorites set to both download and monitor? Does the lat/long show your proper location? What is the range set to?

When creating a Favorites list, there are several options.

If the system you want to program is in the main database, then you can append the system from the main database to the Favorites list you are creating.

If pulling data from a different list (or from a different scanner model), you can copy the sites & talkgroups to a file such as a *.csv, then copy & paste from that file (such as a *.csv) into the matching fields (departments channels/talkgroups, or site frequencies) .

As you are a Premium Subscriber, you can use software, such as ProScan, which you indicated you have) to import from the RRDB you see online into the systems, sites, & departments of the list you are building.

If you append, from the main database, your append carries over the departments, and their talkgroups, as well as sites with their frequencies.
Similarly, if importing from the main database, using ProScan (or ARC536), that also brings over the departments and sites. Both of these methods also carry over the location & range detail for each department and site.

On the other hand, if you copy departments (channel names & talkgroups) and sites (with the frequencies) into, for example, a *.csv file, you can then copy & paste from that file, or import if that is an option for your software, into your Favorites list. However, if copying & pasting (or importing) from a *.csv file, into the list you are building, that will copy the channels & talkgroups of a department, and the frequencies of a site. However, that does not import location information, which is on a different 'screen'. If location, for a department or site, is left blank, location defaults to 0 degrees for both latitude & longitude, which is a location off the coast of Africa in the Atlantic Ocean. The scanner would then treat any department, or site, with a blank, or 0 (zero) location value as being out of range.

I spot checked some of the departments and sites from your *.hpe file. Most of them do have locations entered, though there are a couple of blanks. The *.hpe file you posted is set as No in the list of whether or not to use location, so if the file you are actually scanning is also set as "No", then location control should not be an issue.

Profile - do you have your favorites set to both download and monitor?
As nessnet noted, be sure that your list(s) are set as both to download, as well as monitor.

Look at ''Set Scan Selection"
1743357136904.png

And then access Select Lists to Monitor.

Your Favorites lists should be listed on this screen, if set to be downloaded to the scanner.

For lists that are set to be monitored (when data is written from software to the scanner), you should see a "Yes" besides the list's name.

Make sure that all your lists (that you want) show up in the Selection screen, and that those you do want to monitor are tagged as "Yes".

Edit to add:
Since you have quick keys assigned for your system, you might also need to enable Quick Key Status:
In Sentinel's Favorites list editor, select the name of your list, then access the System Quick Keys tab.

If you <right><click> somewhere in the middle of the list of keys, you'll get a pop-up menu with the option to set Quick Keys Status to "On".

Thanks! I did not have location control set for each FL, nor had I entered my location. I entered my zip code and set a 30 mile range. I'll look at profile in the software, unless there's a setting on the radio to do.

Your location can be set a number of ways - they all essentially do the same thing (set your lat/long).

Direct input - enter your lat/long in your profile, or under set your location on the radio.
Zip code - this just approximates the geographic center (lat/long) of the zip code you enter
GPS - these radios can accept NMEA GPS input - one of the greatest features these radios have. Imagine your radio automatically switching as you cross a state line, county border or city limits. This takes some work to set up, but maybe this can be a goal for you.

You're welcome.

That's a shame, I used to enjoy listening to them on my rides down I-81 and then east towards NC. Picked up a couple of crashes that allowed me to reroute.

Thanks. Yes, VSP is encrypted now.
