Lumpy,

Depending on what you're programming you can certainly program the 2096 by hand, and the good Doc has you well on that path...

You can, however, program it via computer if you have a programming cable, and are willing to download some software for your scanner. If you don't have the cable, and you're not programming a whole bunch of data, probably best to just continue down the hand-programming path.

I live in Weatherford Texas which is Parker county and they run the p25 so it was programmed and I don't know how it got unprogrammed but it did so I'm starting over and I do not have a clue of what I'm doing I mean I'm getting the frequencies put in but it's not ever receiving nothing so I'm doing something wrong

Seems simple enough at the parker county link.
Be advised though, only 5 of the 8 towers can be programmed since the 2096 doesnt trunk track those 769-770 frequencies.
So you'll likely find you won't get it all when they use those three towers.

OK, that gives us the info we need to help. All the info you need is in the two links that Doc sent you. I suggest you download the second one (the one that says: Read here), it's the actual manual. That way, you can search for particular items as you go.

Here's an overview of what I believe you have to do:

1. Program the 150 MHz control freqs that are shown IN RED for the Weatherford site of the Parker County Phase I system: Parker County Trunking System, Parker County, Texas

2. Input the talkgroups you want to hear, making certain to change the talkgroup number string into a text tag if you want to see words instead of just the talkgroup number.

You won't need to program any "tables" for the freqs, since the Pro-96 can still do control channel only trunking, but forget about trying to program any of the 700 MHz sites--the Pro-96 won't trunk track those systems.

I've attached a short cheat sheet that might help--it was put together by a couple of members here, Frank Monroe and Lou Maag--no certain about Frank, but Lou is now sadly a silent key. I've highlighted the parts that you need to do to perform the steps above.

Best of luck!

PS - You can also just input those control freqs and start scanning in "open" mode. Then just save the talkgroups you want to listen to.

You will need to program both the frequencies and talkgroups for the p25 system. (Alternatively, you can scan in open mode if you don’t program the talkgroups). Below are relevant portions from the pro96 cheat sheet in the wiki.

————-
Storing known trunked frequencies
1. Press MANual, Press three digits to get the bank and channel number desired then Press MANual again. (Upper left should read Mxxx for your bank and channel number)
2. Press PGM, (upper left should change from M to P)
3. Press TRUNK
4. Press MODE until Motorola or EDACS is displayed for the appropriate trunk type. (Motorola for P25)
5. Press PGM
6. Enter the frequency
7. Press Enter
8. Repeat steps 5 through 8 until all frequencies are entered in selected bank.
Note: 1. EDACS frequencies are never programmed in the 00 channel in any bank and must be programmed in the correct listed LCN as listed in the reference you are using.
2. Motorola requires only the control channels entered.
3. More than one trunk system may be stored in a bank, provided it is seperated by another conventional channel

Storing known Talkgroup ID’s
1. Press PGM
2. Press TRUNK
3. Enter the 5 digit Mot or 4 digit ED ID
4. Press ENTER
5. Press Up button
6. Repeat steps 3, 4 and 5 until all are entered.

Storing known Text Tags
1. Press Manual, Press three digits to get the bank and channel number desired then Press Manual again. (upper left should read Mxxx for your bank and channel number)
2. Press PGM, (upper left should change from M to P)
3. Press Text, the cursor appears on line 3.
4. Using the numbered keys text in the line up to 12 characters. The letters above each number will help in the selection. Example, POLICE DISP (11 characters counting the space)
The first letter is P, Press the number 7 then the number 1 for P. (7 will open the four numbers PQRS and by selecting 1 is for the first of these four. A 7 then 2 would get the letter Q. Presses up or down to move the courser back and fourth or to correct a mistake.
5. Press Enter

Pretty sure the PRO-96/2096 requires tables for VHF and UHF as it is so archaic it doesn't download bandplans from the control channel. I'm unsure if you can input all 5 tables in FPP or if you need the software to do it, but it will likely need to be done to trunktrack correctly.

You are right.. I had to do that for a local P25 system here. It was a PIA.

The Overlay Regional Interop System in Southeast Virginia is a multisite 800 and 700 Mhz system. Will the PRO2096 scan it and is the control channel 3600 or 9600 baud?

I don't think the PRO2096 will track 700 MHz trunked systems. Also, if the system is a P25, Phase 2, you won't be able to receive it on that radio. Pro-2096 - The RadioReference Wiki

Also, what some of the guys wrote about having to program custom tables in the PRO2096 and PRO96 is correct. I had to do that in order to track the ICI system here in L.A. It is a major PIA. The radio can't just get the settings you need from the control channel, like the newer scanners do.

Thanks! So, I don't hear anything on Virginia Beach 800, Norfolk, or Portsmouth. STARS is 152Mhz, and I don't hear anything there either. Only weather and aircraft. I got the new 1.4 firmware, reset the radio and reprogrammed it. Nothing! So, it just won"t work on these systems? I even bought the programming software. Everything here is going to phase 2 P25. Thanks again.

The ORION system is P25 Phase 2 capable but the majority of the public safety talkgroups are currently Phase 1 (D in Mode column). The PRO-2096 can receive Phase 1.
It sounds like you have monitored the system, so you know better than me. The info from the RR database indicates Phase 2, but maybe they haven't switched over completely yet.
