I just looked in the Db at the Provo/Utah County/Brigham Young University TRS (062B) and noticed that they have several frequencies in the spectrum that need to be abandoned. The Db lists two CCs (857.9125 and 859.9125) which are in the new rebanded spectrum.

Someone should run UniTrunker on this system to verify the frequencies and whether they are in compliance with the FCC mandate and to update the Db.

Yea they have freq's from 854 to 860. I see 2 that must move, and 3 that are optional.
Another issue is, are they Public Safety? ok they have a police force(Private). But 99% of the traffic is not anything related to PS.

So they should move up to SMR range.

CC wrong?

Was in Provo yesterday for a meeting and programmed 062B - CC only from the database. Heard nothing on way in and nothing when leaving so I checked the 2 cc's 857.9125 and 858.9125 and heard no control buzz. Anyone know where they went? Lotsa TG's there!

Wally,

In response to your post I searched the spectrum from 851 to 861 Mhz using UniTrunker and found the BYU (062B) system's CC at 859.9125. I searched for that freq in the FCC's DB and found this license, KNFZ231 , listing the following 10 frequencies.

854.8875
855.5375 <missing from our RR DB>
856.3875
856.8625
856.9125
857.9125
858.8875
858.9125
859.9125 <cc on Nov 8, 2009, but missing from our RR DB>
860.9125

Below are the 18 freqs listed in our RR DB. As you can see, there are some freqs that are obvious discrepencies and some that are questionable.

854.88750
855.26250 WPZV553
855.33750 WPZV553
<855.5125> WPZV553 <not in our DB, but listed on this license>
855.56250 WPZV553
855.81250 WPZV553
856.38750
856.86250
856.91250
857.91250c
858.88750
858.91250c
860.91250
866.17500 <not found in FCC DB, but in our DB>
866.57500 <not found in FCC DB, but in our DB>
866.95000 <not found in FCC DB, but in our DB>
867.36250 <not found in FCC DB, but in our DB>
867.78750 <not found in FCC DB, but in our DB>

I have not monitored this system in the past, so this is all the info I have. I hope it helps.
I will leave UniTrunker running for a while on this system to see which freqs are active and then post again.

-bc

Update: At midnight the CC changed to 858.9125.

Well now, this is an interesting development. I asked about this system a year ago wondering if it needed to be rebanded. Seems they did what they had to do and we never even noticed.

Good report, bchris. I'm glad you have turned your attention to this system. It could yield some nice results. A lot of questions about who, exactly, uses this system besides the University.

Good Info, bchris and thanks. When you have unitrunker running for a while will you be able to submit to the database so next time I head south I can "get it right?"
Thanks!

Thanks dude! Just the other day I was trying to figure out what happened to the frequencies on the BYU system (since I'm currently attending BYU). What do you enter for the re-banded band plan info? I'm using FreeSCAN to program my Uniden BCD396XT.

Thanks!

BYU System Update

The BYU System is apparently a 20-channel system w/ 4 control channels which rotate sequentially every 1-2 days. It uses frequencies from 3 separate FCC permits, 2 licensed to BYU and 1 to Provo City. Anyone using 'Control Channel Only' mode on their scanner should enter at least the 4 control channels. The frequencies used, the call sign, and the licensees are as follows.

KNFZ231 (BYU) (YB-Business)
854.8875
855.5375
856.3875
856.8625
856.9125
857.9125 cc
858.8875
858.9125 cc
859.9125 cc
860.9125 cc

WPKZ444 (Provo City) (YE-Public Safety)
851.1750
851.5750
851.9500
852.3625
852.7875

WPZV553 (BYU) (YB-Business)
855.2625
855.3375
855.5125
855.5625
855.8125

For those of you in the Salt Lake Area who might actually give a hoot about BYU, KNFZ231 shows a 2nd transmitter on Mount Vision, near Kennecott. The other permits show multiple sites as well, but they are not exact duplicates of each other.

Does anyone else find it odd that they have mixed permits from different radio service types in the same trunked system, and also from different agencies? Are they even allowed to use all these freqs on a permit that is not public service? Just interesting.

Disclaimer 1: All 4 of these CC's are used for sure, but there could possibly be more that have not rotated yet. There are no other systems in Utah that use more than 4 CC's. I dont know if this is a limitation of the Motorola system or if it is just standard practice. I feel comfortable at this point stating that these are the CC's for this system, unless someone else feels differently.

Disclaimer 2: I did not get hits on every frequency in the above list, but I did not monitor 24/7 nor did I monitor at peak traffic such as during a football game, etc. I did get significant hit numbers for freqs from all 3 permits, therefore I feel like including all freqs for all licenses would be appropriate.

Thanks dude! Just the other day I was trying to figure out what happened to the frequencies on the BYU system (since I'm currently attending BYU). What do you enter for the re-banded band plan info? I'm using FreeSCAN to program my Uniden BCD396XT.

Thanks!

One of the files attached is a Freescan screenshot of the Band Plan for my BCT15. I think your '396 will look the same.

EDIT: My apologies... My recent posts in this thread perhaps would have been more appropriate for this other thread. Lots of duplicate and related information.

Thanks so much! I'm now happily scanning the BYU system in control channel mode on my BCD396XT. I just left all of the previous frequencies, plus the new control channels you found and added the band plan info and it worked like a charm! Now we need to get the DB updated.

This mismash of licenses gets even stranger. Two BYU held licenses are used on Temple Square system 3D38, WPDA582 and WPZV553. When you check the location tab on the FCC website, you will find that that 60 East Temple, SLC, is covered, but none of the mountaintop sites on the Oquirrhs are.

Listening to the system from Bountiful, where the Oquirrh sites come in beautifully, but Ensign would block anything from downtown SLC, I get a good strong signal on 8 of the 11 channels used by 3D38, but nothing on 855.2625, 855.3375, or 855.5625 (covered by the BYU licenses).

Watching the way the fleets operate, it would seem that some are assigned to always use these three, while other fleets are assigned to always use those frequencies simulcast on both the church office building and the mountaintop. Additionally, on 3 of the simulcast channels, I've only heard P-25, no analog voice.

The breakdown:

854.0375 cwid
854.9125 P-25 only,simulcast
855.1375 P-25 only,simulcast
855.2625 Temple Sq only, not on mountain
855.3375 Temple Sq only, not on mountain
855.5625 Temple Sq only, not on mountain
856.8375 P-25 only,simulcast
857.8375 simulcast
858.8375 simulcast
859.8375 simulcast
860.8375 control channel (never rotates)
