Where to now?

Bummer! I've gone to Purchase Radio as recently as 1/28/07. Didn't know they were closing till I saw this thread. Where do we go now for stuff that's unattainable at Radio Shack?

This is a really good question? I guess we'll have to hunt around on the Internet, and find a good "mail order" warehouse in China or South America, which may have the parts we need. While the prices might be cheaper, they will never be able to beat the first-rate customer service than Dan offered to those who came through his front door. Likewise, I always liked seeing all of the antique radios that lined the walls, which gave anyone the impression that you had walked into a real time-capsule, sort of a museum in a sense. Alas, very sadly, future generations will grow up in Ann Arbor, never knowing this place or what it was like to walk into a real electronics store.

No, it was in the Ann Arbor News edition, of March 15, 2006. Looks like a typo on the Web page to me.

Bummer, I loved that place... Grew up in the area...

...even the smell of the place would illicit memories.... ; )

...I used to take my wife in there and she would say things like, "what IS this place?"...

My choice over Radio Shack is RS Electronics in Livonia.

Ok, I found a place...The Electronic Connection in Westland. It's a place I can spend hours in. Not much in scanners, but if you wanted to build one...they'd probably have all the parts.

How is RS Electronics doing these days? I used to work for them, back in 1970 when they were called Radio Specialties, on Lyndon Ave, in Detroit.

RS is on Schoolcraft in Livonia. Havn't bought off them since they moved out of Wyandotte, quite a few years ago.

Im not supprised at all. As a younger ham, I wasnt impressed with what they had to offer. True, the guys would talk your ear off, but they were a business, and never had anything up to date, or close. They were very high priced, for stuff that some people think was complete garbage.

I know that they were more in the direction of older equipment, but if they would of ordered or at least known of newer equipment, I would of spent my $8,000+ in radio equipment there.
Its a fast moving world now, and 80% of thier items never moved. They just werent keeping up with the times.
