A 29-year-old driver of an allegedly stolen SUV is in police custody after changing lanes erratically and leading officers on a dangerous high-speed chase on Interstate 70 near Silverthorne, the Colorado State Patrol said.
The chase happened just before 1 p.m. Thursday near milepost 203 on eastbound I-70 after police said they received reports of a hit-and-run crash.
Troopers chased the red 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee to milepost 235 near Georgetown where they said the suspect, Bobby Bonner of Denver, came to a complete stop but then sped off when a CSP trooper approached. The high-speed chase continued until the Cherokee exited at Idaho Springs, where it stopped and let a passenger out, troopers said. The passenger fled on foot before police arrested him.
Authorities said Bonner then drove back onto I-70 and continued trying to elude the CSP until he reached Evergreen Parkway, where he bailed out of the Cherokee and fled on foot, troopers said.
Troopers said they quickly caught him and took him into custody.
The passenger was identified as 19-year-old Kory Wilke of Aurora.
The CSP said the Cherokee was reported stolen in April 2006.
Both Bonner and Wilke face multiple charges.
