I have a newly acquired 2720 that I am using as a back-up radio, and am trying to work out some confusion on the programming cable connection. I have searched and can only find a programming cable that uses the phono-type plug at the radio end, but I don't see a connection of that type on the back of my radio. I find a DIN 8pin connection that is labeled DATA on the radio. The phone type receptacle on the back is marked (both of them) for audio output, and I am using them for speaker output as designed. Am I missing something or am I stuck programming this radio by hand?

Hopefully one of you Icom experts can help me out...Thanks in advance.

Bill

Pic's of the only type cables I can find, and the data connection I am referring to on the left side of the picture of the radio's back connections. I see the Cat-5 size mic connection, and the phone size connection for the extension/remote cable.

Programming cable port...

Thanks, Jay. I guess I breezed by that in the manual. Just couldn't get my mind around plugging in to program through a speaker jack. I'll give it a shot. Thanks again.

2720H programming cable

I'm new to this forum and resurrecting an old thread because I couldn't locate an answer in searches.

I have my Icom 2720H mounted inside my dash (2002 Tahoe) for security since there was a nice large usable space where the OnStar unit used to sit (since it no longer works). I wanted to try to keep the programming cable attached, but it appears that when it is that I get no volume from the right side bank.

Is there any way to hook up a speaker to the programming cable (I am using the USB cable) so that it will run audio when attached to a speaker and is still usable as a programming cable when detached form the speaker & attached to the PC?

Thank you for any insight

Why not get the remote head package and mount the body of the radio where you have easier access to programming? I don't believe that you can pass audio through the DB9 cable. I used to own a 2720, and programming by hand was easy. Lots easier than lugging out the laptop to the car to program in a new channel.

I actually do have the remote head package and have the head mounted more conveniently. I'm not using the DB9 programming cable though, I have the USB programming cable instead (if that makes a difference). Programming by hand does seem pretty easy, but as I have IC-2720's in both of my trucks (and probably the trailer eventually too) it is easier for my use to have them programmed identically.

What I haven't been able to figure out is if the radio "knows the difference" between a speaker and the programming cable being plugged into the SP2 port. If it can tell, does it also automatically go into a data / programming mode as soon as the programming cable is installed? AND if that is the case, are there any settings that can be easily "switched back and forth" to manually tell it to do so instead of doing so automatically?

And sorry about any confusion in the ICOM Receivers forum ... I was just trying to add a post in what seemed like a connected topic (based on title after doing a search) instead of making a new thread with essentially the same title.
