Ive been using my Dimond RH77CA with my Uniden325p2 for a few months now I have been wondering why the antenna seems to rotate independently of the locking BNC connector? I also noticed that when I pull the locking ring for the BNC connector down I also noticed that when I turn the upper section of the antenna it appears to be screwing down giving me slightly more consistent reception. What is going on here? Is this supposed to happen? If so what is it used for? I could not find a manual on the internet to answer my question so I thought I'd ask here.

All BNC connectors rotate. They were never really intended for use on HT's and scanners. Not mechanically as sound as they should be. Yes, the ring locks, but the center can rotate. This is normal. By the way it's Diamond.

This is a longer base loaded antenna which puts more strain on the radio end. This may be causing problems on the radio end. Make sure that the radio connector is not loose on the top of the radio.

Finally, the various types of the 77 are amateur antennas for 144/440 MHz. I have two with both types of SMA connectors. They are not scanner antennas per se. Of course, they do work, but depending on the bands you monitor you may be better served with a different antenna especially for 700/800 MHz. They are of little value on low band.

Your comment leads me to believe you are not turning the barrel of the BNC 1/4 turn to lock it on the stubs sticking out of the other mating side from the radio. You can just push it on, but it needs a 1/4 turn to close the deal to mechanically lock down the connection.

Yes, the same thing happens to my Diamond RH-77CA (It's 2 years old) on my buddies Uniden Bearcat BCD-325P2 that I have had here in my home office for over a month. It is NORMAL with this antenna and the Uniden Bearcat stock antenna does the same thing.
Happy Thanksgiving to you.

Thanks everyone for getting back to me on this. I was just a little confused about why does this, now I know the answer. I also wanted to make sure I did not have a lemon as I know that it is possible with these kinds of things.

Happy Thanksgiving,
