I am familiar with I-calls, having a U-396T, but wonder: since they use an available system frequency, would one be able to copy them if monitoring in a non-trunked mode, i.e., all system frequencies being programmed?

I don't know about the 396 but the UNIDEN 250, you can program as a talkgroup 700000 and monitor I-CALLS. For some reason though, I often get false calls that way and true I-CALLS are very few and far between.

Individual calls and group calls are handled the same way, with only two exceptions:

A channel grant on a request for an individual call is addressed only to the called individual ID, not to all subscribers selected on a talkgroup; and

Disconnects are handled somewhat differently, to minimize the need for fresh channel grants during an individual call exchange.
