I purchased an osj 146/440 antenna. Is there anything I should know before installing the antenna to make sure I get the best performance out of the antenna? Am I supposed to remove the red caps on the antenna or leave them on? This is replacing an diamond 510hdm antenna if that makes any difference. I am also planning on putting it on my dx engineering 46 foot collapsible mast. Thank you for any help or advice.

Don't remove the red caps.
Mount it at the very top of the pole so the mast and antenna elements are not adjacent to each other.
If this is a permanent installation, make sure you properly waterproof the connection. UHF connectors are not waterproof.

Do I need a choke or the loops in the coax for best performance on 440mhz?

You shouldn't need that. Just hook it up and secure the coaxial cable to the mast so it isn't putting strain on the connector.
I was asking because the manual says to put loops in the coax by the antenna for 440mhz performance.

OK, well if that's what they want, then give it a try.

A half loop should be enough. The reason, is to give rain somewhere to run off your feedline rather than collect and possibly get into your connections.
