After working with Rodger Kerr at Yaesu Tech. Support, we've come to the conclusion that what I've been experiencing is nothing more than a software glitch that he and his team are currently working on. Since this radio is working great otherwise, we've also agreed that it doesn't need replacing, since that would be like returning your cell phone because an app glitched!
All in all, I am very happy with this rig! I've got my paddles hooked up to it, and it works great as a practice keyer. And since Yeasu provided a way to completely disable the transmitter using the settings menu, there's absolutely no way to radiate with it, accidentally or otherwise.
Yaesu makes a quality product. I've had an FT-1000D for years, using it as a receiver also, and it still works as great as the day I bought it! I'm very comfortable hanging onto this FT-710, as that glitch isn't by any means a show stopper. And, for you people using this rig as it's intended to be used, I wouldn't be too concerned about it as you probably won't run into it, and the nature of the glitch is in no way detrimental to any of the radio's other functions.
Thanks to all who took the time to answer all of my questions. You are all very knowledgeable people, and I appreciate your taking the time to share your knowledge, and experience with this "lowly" SW listener.
Happy DX!
