Today I decided I was going to do the R820T HF modification, RTL-SDR Direct Sampling Mode - rtl-sdr.com once done I tried it out. All I was successful at was tuning in the 530 Khz to the 1700 khz band. At least I know it works, couldn't get anything before. I don't know if you would call this a successful modification or not as I didn't pickup much else between 100 Hz and 24 Mhz. I suppose if I had a proper HF antenna that would probably help, seeing as this is day one on this mod., I have an excuse, better antenna to follow as I read up on them. Oh, I did pickup a lot of FM stations barging in, I guess I will have to get a filter and eliminate them. Mostly I was just curious as to how well the dongle would do in the AM band.
P.S. If you try this modification be very careful as SMT is very difficult to work with, I consider myself very lucky that I was actually successful at doing the soldering job, If you aren't careful you can dislodge the tiny little capacitor that you are trying to solder a wire to, and need I say that if you move it you will probably not get it back into place.
