Hello:

This is my first scanner ever and my first post. I bought a used Radio Shack Pro 137 and finally figured out how to program it after a couple of hours with the user-unfriendly guide. I know a scanner is basically to SCAN, but at the Nextel Cup race in Atlanta, will I want to listen to one driver's frequency for extended periods of time, and if so, how do I do that? So far I have programmed in some local police frequencies and it seems to scan them instead of staying on one of them.

Don't laugh at me, please! Thank you

Just hit the pause PSE button when you hear what you want to hear. It will stay on that frequency (or talk group if a trunked system) until you hit it again to scan.

Most radio shack scanners have a MAN (Manual) button either push manual while it is stopped on that particular channel (frequency). or press MAN the channel number and MAN again. When you want to Scan again just hit SCAN

Back when I used to go to a bunch of NASCAR races I would listen to the MRN local production frequency (lots of good stuff there while on commercial breaks, some good non-broadcast info and laughs) of 454.0000, I'm not sure if thats still correct but it most likely is. Then I would keep my favorite driver's (Ken Schader) frequency set as the PRIority. That way you can follow the race broadcast and associated side stories and info and still catch all the traffic from your team of choice. I don't have your model of radio to explain the proper way to set this up but I'm sure someone else that is familiar can help.
Have a great time at the race!

My recommendation: Listen to MRN radio (454.000) most of the time. Program it in and then lock it out. Then program in the Nascar officials channel (461.200?) and whatever drivers you want to listen to. When MRN goes to a commercial, hit scan and listen to the officials and the drivers for a few minutes. Do it also during wrecks and pit stops. MRN will be locked out, so you won't "hang" on it. After a few minutes, go back manually to MRN radio and listen again. MRN can be great to listen to during commercial breaks though, as it is a constant signaland you can hear what the broadcasters are all saying to each other. I've been going for years and listen to the MRN channel 90% of the time.. Just experiment and find out what you like.
