As i program my radio i notice that some of the frequencies i have don't have tones because they are tac channels i'm assuming. So what do i put in for the tone?

EDIT: Can you provide more info, as to what you are refering to? Amateur radio does not have 'TAC' channels perse.

Always program tone as "search", it's faster, unless you have a nearby user on the same freq.

Depending on the radio (or software used to program the radio), to select no-tone, choose "None" or "CSQ" or simply make no choice. But, as gewecke mentioned, "search" is often the most-useful choice. Using "search" as your default choice will help you learn whether a tone is used, and if so, which specific tone is used.

Look up CTCSS on Wikipedia.

Basically, simplex frequencies do not need a tone unless you're trying to listen for someone in particular and you don't want to listen to anyone else. For example, I could be lurking on 146.52 MHz with a tone squelch set so that only those who send that tone with their signal will break the squelch. This way, friends who know you're listening with that tone squelch will know how to get your attention.

If you're just listening, set your receiver to CSQ or carrier squelch. Don't bother with tones. You may need a tone or DPL signal to get in to a repeater. This is done so that skip (on ten meter FM, for example) or signals intended for other repeaters with overlapping coverage do not cause the repeater to key up.
