Absolutely, great antenna and most of us here use it alot. It is resonant in the 800Mhz band and makes it a great antenna. Made by GRE. I use them on all of my handhelds. :)

I live in the boonies and it does definately help me, but didn't exactly blow me away either. I was probably expecting way too much out of it since it is for a handheld. But I am happy with the antenna. It improves my 800 reception considerably. For $16 it is a good deal.

I have used this antenna as well with good reviews. However, I have noticed that sometimes i get better reception using a fixed antenna mounted to the mirror of my big rig, and sometimes I get better reception not using an antenna at all. Over all good antenna.

I have 3 of them for my scanners. They made a major improvement on my BCD 396T. Their price is very nice too, under $20.

What is it it about ths RS 800 mhz antenna that is better than any other? And is there a noticable difference in the reception?

From my cubical I have zero reception on my cell phone, and there's a tower within a mile of my building. However, I can listen to the county trunked system flawlessly from my desk as well as the next county over on a good day all with a RS antenna.

I have two of the RS 800 mHz duckies (one each for my Pro-92 and Pro-94). The Pro-92 has lousy sensitivity at 800 mHz and the stock antenna just did not cut it. So, I bought the RS 800 mHz antenna and that brought my Pro-92 "to life" for local trunking. The stock, "one-size-fits-all" antenna that comes with the radio hardly worked for 800 trunking with this radio.

On my Pro-94, this antenna increased the signal so much, I now have very little noise with the signals, compared to the original stock antenna that came with the scanner.

This antenna works great on 800 and does a decent job with 450 mHz signals. However, for VHF (30-50 and 144-174 mHz), the stock antenna does perform better with weaker signals.

I have the RS 800 - does a little better than your stock duckie. However, I've found the Radioware Seeker 800Mhz to be far superior. It's a bit more expensive at $40, but you know the old saying... I can pick up neighboring county systems at 30+ miles away.

800 mhz antenna from the shack

Purchased the 800 MHz antenna from The local shackfor $16.99 and it's well worth it.
before I could can now pick my local TRS 30 miles away I also may check out the Radioware Seeker antenna. If some of you dont have the 800 MHz antenna from Radio Shack you need to pick it up today.

Tell me how it is bad on the radio.

I just thought running it without an antenna would cause damage.... maybe it is just when you Tx it does that.

I will soon be buying a 396 (when income tax return arrives!!). I wonder if they will ever make an SMA version so it could be used without the SMA-BNC adapter.

Waltel has some very good 800 MHz SMA mount antennas for handhelds! They are made by either Antenex or Centurion. For BNC mounts I stick with the RS 800 Antenna.
