I just got off the phone with Radio Shack customer service (1-800-843-7422 option 6) to clarify the current warranty on the Radio Shack-branded scanners. The reason for my phone call was that the website pages for all of the Radio Shack scanners (PRO-649, PRO-650, PRO-651, PRO-652 and PRO-668) all clearly state that there is a 1-year parts warranty. After making a non-scanner purchase at a local Radio Shack store last week, however, I found the following disclaimer printed on the bottom of my register receipt:

"Effective 02-06-15 the warranty on RadioShack brands of merchandise is now limited to 30 days from date of purchase regardless of any warranty paperwork included with a product or any information on the receipt or posted on signs in the store."

Ed, the customer service representative that I spoke with on the phone, confirmed that the 30-day warranty on Radio Shack-branded scanners (as currently printing on store register receipts) was in fact correct and that the 1-year parts warranty currently posted on the webpages of all 5 Radio Shack-branded scanners was incorrect and was no longer valid. He told me they would be working on posting the correct 30-day warranty information on each scanner's webpage.

Let the buyer beware!

The big question is where is there a radio shack that still has scanners, not that I would buy one there anyway. It's a phone and battery store.

I was in a local Radio Shack/Sprint store in Massachusetts last week and I saw a PRO-651 and PRO-668 on the shelf for sale. I didn't inquire if they had the other Radio Shack models in stock.

My local store has not had scanners for a while. The last trip I made, they were stocking the shelves with T-shirts and cell phone chargers. It looked more like a cell phone / Apple store.

As I read your post the first time, the above "quoted" stood out to me as the principle subject of the heads-up. After seeing all the comments related to scanners, I re-read your original heads-up very carefully. Now I am wondering if my "Reads for Understanding" (First Grade terminology, lol), is slipping a little.

So, is the heads-up about a RS scanner problem (most posters), or is it about a RS store-wide merchandise problem (my reading)?

Anyway, THANKS for that heads-up!

I'm not the OP, of course. But I think what was intended was a "heads up" that even though the web page still shows scanner warranties as a full year, in actuality, Radio Shack is saying on their receipts that it really is only 30 days.

If I were to purchase one of their units, I believe a case could be made for false advertising if the web page still states one year warranty, and I had a failure at, say, the two month mark. But I'm neither a lawyer, nor do I intend to purchase a R/S branded unit.

I am the OP and that is exactly the information that I wanted to put out there. I especially wanted to emphasize that a telephone conversation with RS customer service confirmed the 30-day warranty for Radio Shack-branded scanners as is currently being printed on store register receipts.

Other than the stores that Closed (two winters ago), EVERY RS I've been to, still has Scanners. Mostly the 651 and 652, a few still had the 668

A few might still have a Uniden floating around.....

NOT - many have restocked the well maintained parts bin's
Guess YMMV but my experience has been the exact opposite

Saw 651-652 and a 668 in a local RS here as well recently. Lots of Sprint junk too but they do still seem to be keeping some of the "old selection" stocked.

My question is, how difficult can it be to update a website? Not a Webmaster here by any means but this 30-day business has been going on for a very long time...it would seem to me that they could have updated at least the high-dollar items by now.

FYI I just received this email from Radio Shack Customer Care confirming in writing what I was told on the phone two days ago regarding the current warranty policy on Radio Shack-branded scanners:

"The warranty on our RadioShack scanners, including RadioShack’s PRO-649, PRO-650, PRO-651, PRO-652 and PRO-668, is a 30 day warranty. The warranty information on the website is incorrect and the appropriate department that oversee our website are moving forward to correct the incorrect information reflected on the website. I do not have a timeframe for which this process will be completed, but I have forwarded your information to them as well."

I worked there 1980-1983, again 1987-1989, and lastly 1990-1993. They were good from the 70's to about 1992, that's when I saw major changes happening internally and in product.

They stopped being a leader in new and innovative products, and I saw cheap junk replacing the quality merchandise. Within days of the first 900mhz phone hitting the market (a big jump from 46/49mhz), I wrote to corporate and urged them to carry these ASAP.

Their replies were a bunch of "it's too advanced for average users", "the customer will see no benefit", and my favorite: "they will cost too much to produce, making the price point too high".

After I read those replies from corporate, I knew they were done but worked there for a little while longer hoping they would come to their senses. They were good for the time but they are mostly useless now.

With just a 30-day warranty, it's obvious Radio Shack doesn't want to mess with them after they leave the shelf. The law requires a warranty of merchantability and that's pretty much where it stops with the company.

Radio Shack re-instating 1-year warranty on their scanners

As an update, I reached out to the Radio Shack Corporate/Executive Offices regarding this discrepancy between the 30-day warranty being printed on Radio Shack store receipts vs. the 1-year warranty displayed on the webpages of the five Radio Shack scanners. I received a telephone call today from Radio Shack Corporate and was told that after having this matter brought to their attention, they will be re-instating the 1-year warranty on their scanners. Additionally they will be dropping the 30-day warranty currently being printed on store cash register receipts and instead honor the length of the warranty that is included in the package of the Radio Shack product that you purchase. For the five Radio Shack scanners that will be 1-year but for other Radio Shack products it may be different (i.e. 90 days).

I asked how this 1-year warranty would work seeing that Radio Shack no longer offers any repair services for their products. I was told that it would be an in-store exchange. You would simply bring in your non-working/defective product during the warranty period and you would be given a brand-new unit in exchange. Radio Shack would then return the non-working/defective product to the manufacturer for credit.

I was told that this policy change would be taking effect immediately and that Radio Shack would be notifying their stores and telephone/email customer service reps about this warranty policy change. They will also be removing the 30-day warranty policy from their store cash register receipts.

That is all of the information that I was told over the phone. If you have any further comments, questions, criticisms or concerns regarding this please contact Radio Shack customer service directly.

Maybe they are realizing that scanners are still a marketable item and there is a booming demand for scanners and they wish to rekindle the very thing that made radioshack back in the day!

Maybe. Since they've all but gone out of business, it appears their decision-making hasn't met with much success in the past. We can only hope.
