THis only applies to Canada. InterTan owned the rights to the Canada stores. Cicuit City may have assumed control there. If they own the rights to InterTan, they can do what they wish. This has no bearing on the United States locations.

Hopefully we will start to see more scanners on the shelf, right now if you go to their web site it shows one old scanner & one freq guide, time to start a petition to bring back the scanner ! I am sure that like many other Canadians who got there first start in scanning was at Rad Shack in their local town. I know I did as I still have my first original 4 channel crystal set Pro-6 .

I hear ya there! I bought so many scanners from Usless Gadget Shack, even had their credit card for those "must have it now purchases".

I was so miffed when they stopped selling scanners. I chopped up their card, cause I never used for over 2 years. They phoned me once in 2000 wanting to know why I haven't used my card lately? Boy did I vent.

Let's hope this transition happens quick.

Richster.

Hope you guys aren't holding your breath waiting for Circuit City to carry scanners. I didn't see any on the website.

The only hope you'll have is when Radio Shack opens it's new line of stores, that they decide to carry scanners.

And if you are a penny-pincher like me, the mark-up for the Canadian market will make you wonder , ..why bother? :?
I mean, they're selling the BC 245 for $499.
I bet the 96 series of RS scanners(Pro -96 and Pro-2096) will retail between $800 to $900 . With the bloody taxes, it be over 1 G.
.... and you'll have to qualify as a legitimate listener of digital transmissions per the Industry Canada directive. :x

Carrying non-digital scanners would be less hassle. Wonder what the NEW Radio Shack will do ?

It may be coincidence, but this week every Radio Shack I've been in looks to be trying to empty their racks of electronics components and gearing more towards consumer electronics, computer peripherals and toys. That leads me to fear the main change will be that you'll have to hunt down hardcore electronics supply shops now for anything more esoteric than a bettery.

Petition? Moderators?? Members???

Why don't we start something going here in radio reference? obviously r/s dropped the scanners due to interest. i'm sure now that technology has tapered a bit and they arent bringing out new scanners every 6 months they might be willing to stock some stores with them. my suggestion has always been to have a Radio Shack Radio store, strictly with scanners and ham radio equipment, accessories etc... similar to Radio World . But i think we should come up with something to start a 'radio reference' revolt. We have the interest here..... thats a start. what does everyone else think????

Don't go nuts on a revolt just yet!! RadioShack (US) (you know the ones that actually stock scanners), is in appeal court with Curcuit City over the rights to the Radio Shack name. Radio Shack (US) was trying to sprout up stores all across Canada by the end of this year, but CC is a sore loser and seems to want to do business "Canadian style" by limiting competition. Radio Shack (US) will not move into Canada if they cannot use it's own name. Curcuit City LOST the rights to use that name a couple of months ago (thats why they're changing to the source), and are trying to keep Radio Shack (US) out until 2009. If they lose the appeal, Radio Shack stores will be popping up everywhere with scanners in stock. If CC wins, all existing Radio Shack stores (the ones that CC own) will become "The Source" with no scanners. If that happens, then we revolt.

I'm watching this case pretty closely. Here is a link to another thread discussing Radio Shack's (US) move into Canada.

Also, here is a link to Radio Shack's (US) site discussing their intentions of moving into Canada. (look for "Operations in Canada" heading).

That'd be sweet :) So if RS usa comes to Canada, they won't just keep the same style Radio Shack we are used to here already? More stock and cool gizmos? (And other useless stuff that everyone doesnt need ) ;)

The Radio Shack US stores are exactly the same as our current stores with a few exceptions, scanners being one of them.

Whether it's Radio Shack US or Circuit City, it's the same old junk.

I went to "The Source by Circuit City" in the Westhills Towne Centre in Calgary today. It happened to be in the same shopping community I was picking up a few things in, and I had been thinking of getting an external GPS antenna. I knew I had about a 0.021% chance of finding it in there, as I'd been there before when it was RS. Still, I ventured inside anyway.

This place might be The Source... of all things that NexxTech wants to dump. WTF is a "kung fu massager"? On the other hand, most of the store was completely unchanged, still having RS parts and Monster cables, etc all over the place.

Naturally, I didn't find a GPS antenna there. But the guy behind the counter said, "No, but we have the power adapters for the Magellan GPS if you want one." WTF??

Good to see the staff is still the same caliber.

These Source stores are a joke in Windsor.I went to two here recently looking for an FM trap (never found it),and some outdoor RG6 cable. You could hardly walk through either of them with all the stock there. All the old RS employees are gone.I managed to find the cable at the second store, but it was 100ft.Only needed 25ft.

The employees were helpful, but dumb. They got on my nerves trying to help me (clueless). At checkout he tried to sell me a cellphone (as usual). No I don't want one..I won't use it .."you sure"?"we have some really nice picture phones", "blah blah blah"."We have a great stereo on sale..."blah blah, blah".No...I have a top of the line Kenwood system, surround sound etc.,oldie but a goodie."how many watts?"...200 watts."well this Panasonic is 500 watts"...NO thanks!

Rings up my cable purchase...."would you like the service plan?""it's only 3 dollars"Uh...no thanks!

WTF?Service plan for my coax?Ugh...Just let me outta there.

Ugh...some things never change.

I hope RS does reopen in Canada on it's own, BUT with the same catalogue as the U.S.Wishful thinking on my part.

Prices would still be outrageous here anyways *sigh*.
