Radio Shack Pro 106 Display Problem

ok here is whats going on.

When i first turn on radio all i get is a
blank screen. After 10 or 15 minutes
display comes on and radio works fine.
this happens with either battery or ac
operation.

Any idea what radio shack charges for
scanner repairs ?

The warranty is for 1 year after date of purchase. You should first try to do a radio reset. The procedure is listed in the manual.

I did a full reset that did not correct
the problem.
I will be making a trip to radio shack.

Blank display

I too am experiencing a blank display. I just got the scanner and while connected to the computer, (was working fine after uploading info from Win500), it beeped and then the display went blank. I can still control the scanner from Win500 and the audio is fine, the backlight works as well just no letters and numbers in the display!

Any ideas? I can't see anything to try a factory re-set.

Just following the instructions in the scanner manual to do a reset, press 0 when turning on the scanner wait 1 sec. then press 1 (check manual for correct sequence). Users should also make sure that when you plug in the computer cord or power cord to turn off the scanner before connecting any wires.

A suggestion, if you are using Win500 check the Contrast setting, maybe you need to adjust it one way or the other. I think the default is 16.

Contrast is default 4 with range of 1 - 7.

Use PGM F3 (GLOB) for changes on the go. IOW, much easier then software.

Don't bother trying their number for customer service. You will play phone roulette until you tear your hair out. Talk to your local RS manager. He should be well versed in sending units to their repair station. It will cost an upfront charge of $20 which will applied to the charge if you get it fixed.

Their service center, however, is quite good and usually provides decent turnaround time.

I had the display crapout problem on my 7 month old 106. It was repaired under warranty at no charge and now almost a year later still works great!

Hello- The phone number to the Radio Shack service center in Amherst NY is 716-836-4148 and we do repair older Radio Shack scanners like the Pro-43 as well other brands like Uniden & GRE.You can ask
for Bob and I can talk to you about your scanner.

well my scanner is back and working fine.
The service center did a fast turn around time and
total cost was 54.00 dollars.

I think you'll also find that the scanner performs a bit better as well since these service centers also do a tweak up to factory specs. I think they had a marginal batch of scanners with bad displays as I've heard of a number of them, mine included. Once fixed, still working great after over a year.

If there have been several screen blank out on the Pro-106 maybe we should start a forum and see if there is a particular date rang that was bad?
