I have a radio shack pro 2052 desktop scanner. The problem is that no matter what I do, it refuses to search for talkgroups. I cannot get it to search or even program talkgroups. Does anyone else have this problem? I dont know much about this scanner and any help would be great!. If anyone wants to know, the system I am monitoring is the Milwaukee public safety type 2 smartnet system if that helps at all.

Just took a quick glance at the system you want to monitor in the RR data base.
Two possible causes are;
The data base indicates the system may have been rebanded. which means the 2052 doesn;t recognise the new frequenices
Also mentions a P25 digital site which the 2052 can't monitor.

Pro-2052 trunking

The Pro-2052 base unit scanner has trunking capabilities for Motorola and EDACS trunking systems but
specific talk groups on a trunking system cannot be programmed in. When all the frequencies and contro
channels of a trunking system are programmed in, all services that use that trunking service will be heard.

Untrue. The 2052 can handle 5 banks of 10 talkgroups each. The restriction with this is that the radio must hear the control channel in order to program the talkgroups (typical for older trunktrackers). But as VE1SEF correctly points out, this radio cannot support P25 trunking, nor can it be rebanded.

To find a compatible scanner that would work well with the Milwaukee system, I'd go to the Wisconsin forum and ask. Local help is always better in cases like these.

best regards..Mike

VE1SEF and Mike are correct. DB indicates site 1 is rebanded so scanner can't find new voice frequencies if system is reprogrammed with site 1 frequencies. However, if site 2 is correct and still active it should work. Remove all of site 1 frequencies and use all of site 2 frequencies...talkgroups can likely remain the same or scanner can be set to SEARCH for all talkgroups.

I stand corrected

I stand corrected, I was not aware that the Pro-2052 could be programmed with talk groups. I however do
not program talk groups into any of my trunking scanners. I like to hear all services transmitted on a trunking
system and it simplifies the programming to only have to program the control frequencies and the voice
frequencies and not deal with programming talk groups

2052 has no provision for CC only scanning. It is however, one of the earlier scanners to allow scanning by agency.

As Mike suggested you can put 10 important PD talkgroups in sub-bank 1, 10 important FD talkgroups in sub-bank 2, 10 important EMS talkgroups in sub-bank 3, 10 important city services in sub-bank 4 and still have 10 more for sub-bank 5. Each can be easily toggled.

My 2052's are set sub 1 and 2 for PD, 3 and 4 for FD/EMS and 5 as city.
