Seems to not be programmable. Only lets me program 6 digits. Is this because it is not digital? I can get local weather just no police or fire.

From the manual:

Your scanner automatically rounds the entered frequency to the nearest valid frequency. For example, if you enter a frequency of 151.473, your scanner accepts it as 151.475

• Valid trunked system frequencies range from 851.0000–868.9875 in 12.5 kHz steps

Note: If you entered an invalid frequency, the scanner beeps, the channel number flashes and Error appears.

Mines the same it lets you put in the 6 digits then 7 becomes small in right corner. All the codes by me are longer than that. It won’t let me put in anymore.

855.26250 is the local number I’m trying to put in and my scanner won’t accept that many numbers so maybe I’m doing something wrong

Are you entering 7 digits - 855.2625 (without the trailing 0)? What happens if you enter 855.262 or 855.263?

Again - what State / County / City are you trying to monitor? "Local" does not help us help you. We want to confirm whether your radio is capable of receiving your local fire/police.

Frequency Range (MHz) Step (kHz) Transmission
29–29.7 5 10-Meter Ham Band
29.7–50 5 VHF Lo
50–54 5 6-Meter Ham Band
108–136.9750 12.5 Aircraft
137–144 5 Military Land Mobile
144–148 5 2-Meter Ham Band
148–174 5 VHF Hi
406–420 12.5 Federal Government
420–450 12.5 70-cm Ham Band
450–470 12.5 UHF Standard Band
470–512 12.5 UHF “T” Band
806–956 12.5 Public Service

OK, so the step size matters.
a 5 there is only 3 decimal places (155.13)
on the 12.5 steps just press the 5 anyway (855.2625)
and if you put it in right it will show 855.262 the computer rounds it up anyway.

Sorry guys I’m new to this. My dad and grandma have used scanners their whole life’s. I found this scanner in my girlfriends late grandpas house this past weekend. Was hopeing to be able to use it. Tuscola county Michigan is the police and fire I’m trying to program on it. I have tried putting in the number but doesn’t seem to work. Weather works that is all.

according to the Radio Reference database Tuscola County MI has moved operations to a P25 digital network (unencrypted).

i guess you mean this freq. it is labeled fallback and that would mean they use it when the other system is down or they can't get to it.
Michigan's Public Safety Communications System (MPSCS)
Project 25 Phase I
that is the one they use and that P-25 phase 1 means digital.
you will not hear them with that radio.

Thank you so much for that. What should I buy to replace this one then?

at a minimum you'll need a radio capable of decoding phase 1 P25 systems of which there are several. the good news is that you should be able to save $ and get a used phase 1 radio. i use and like the Radio Shack pro-197 and pro-106 (there are several others). if you want to hedge your bets that the MI system will upgrade to phase 2 P25 in the future or if you want a better radio in terms of decoding simulcast systems then you should look at the Uniden 436, 536 or SDS200 (there are others). be prepared to pay more...a lot more...for a phase 2 radio.

but before you buy anything i'd recommend learning more about P25 systems as well as how those systems are used in MI in general and your county in particular as well as the various features of the radios needed to monitor them. these radios can be programmed by hand but, IMO, they are much, much easier to program with software but they all have learning curves. consider joining the MI forum at radioreference.com. lots of information about P25 online.
