Just Curious to what the PL stands for on the frequency, example 154.225-PL105 what does the PL stand for and how do you program it with the PL.

Problem you will have is the Pro 95 cannot do those tones. The Pro 96 and 97 were the next scanners to do tones. You have a mode to switch from FM, AM MOT and EDAC but nothing for tones.

For the most part if you have two people on the same frequency and using the Pro 95, you will hear them both, and they can over lap each other. Radios have special tones that when you program that into the scanner, if the radio does not squelch that tone, you will not hear the traffic. Helpful when you have two an agencies close using the same freq or two freqs that are close to each other and will stop the problem of interference from other devices like tvs and computers.

GMRS 2 way personal radios have different channels you can use which will use different freq.
Then they have additional settings so you can choose more of a private conversation which uses those tones.

Look at this doc. http://www.uniden.com/pdf/GMR2889-2CKom.pdf
CTCSS and DCS on the chart which are those tones

I loved my Pro 95 except for not having the tone option.

It should be called CT

PL is actually a trademarked term by Motorola which means "Private Line". The generic term, the one which I believe should be the ONLY term used here in the RR DB is "CT" or CTCSS (continuous tone controlled squelch system).

The scanner model prior to the PRO-95, the PRO-92 used the terms "PL" & "DPL". The later models such as the PRO-97 use the terms "CT" & "DC". DC is short for DCS (digital coded squelch).

Fortunately, GA
ok so you change the mode to? then enter that code like example 151.3 for NJ State Police and bingo its in?

Read gmclam's post. The 95 doesn't do PL/DPL at all. I know, I had one. Main reason I sold it. To much I listen to has to have either PL/DPL.

Fuzzy, you need to read the posting dates for some of these posts. Lots you've been responding to are YEARS old. You're gonna give yourself an aneurysm.

As you've probably learned by now, PL, DPL, CTCSS etc. are the acronyms for various types of selective squelch systems used by the radio manufacturers to allow multiple nearby systems to use the same frequencies without interfering with each other. Every scanner manufacturer is different in how the annotate it in their scanners. GRE (who makes your PRO-197) for example uses differen modes (FM, AM, CT, DC MO, ED, LT) for both different modulations schemes, trunking systems and for squelch coding types. Since they're all different functions, putting them in one 'mode' setting on the scanner often confuses people. For example, using CT (for CTCSS) turns on the selective squelch function but also assumes it's using FM modulation. Weird but true. I imagine Uniden scanners have similar quirks.

Yeah Bob sorry I'm not really looking at dates here on a normal seccion I have the user manual in one hand and about 4 windows open reading everything I can on here...lol so far what I learned is this scanner likes to be in global mode it works ok there I programmed in about 30 frequencies so far and its working fine may even start to lock out some. In a few weeks I'll probably be better off than I am right about now!

You may find that a programming cable and software will make it more enjoyable and intuitive to program your scanner. While my scanners are not object-oriented like the Pro-197, I find I'd go nuts trying to do trunking systems without the software. I can only shudder to think of how a Pro-197 must be to hand-program... Good luck on that.

well so far I have about 45 frequencies in her and I'm probably going to lock out a few I think I'm listening to some survallence stuff where they are definately hogging up the airwaves..lol I found my used manual on RR so its now a part of my pc so as I read more I'm begining to understand how this object oriented stuff works I think?

With the programming cable and radioreference subscription I got the Pro-163 programed with hundreds of frequencies and several trunked systems in a few minutes... Just sayin'

I tried that I think I actually put some in yesterday but to me the software was very confusing or I missed a import or a export command. But correct me if I'm wrong aren't there tons of preprogrammed data in this thing? I was able to open a folder and it started to scan I think all the public safty agencies or talkgroups in The entire state...right before I recieved that heap memory error.

The problem with pre-programmed stuff is that it's very generic. What you want is all the interesting stuff from within the area you'll be using the scanner. It does no good to have FBI frequencies in there if the nearest FBI user is 200 miles away. That's why the frequencies on RadioReference are organized by state, county and municipality. You can narrow down your frequencies by reception area.

LOL I agree Bob I was able to open a V-scan folder 18 yesterday which was Jersey but your right it basically gave me all 21 counties in Jersey I think...Thats why I was inputing them in manually so I customized it to my local frequencies...some of the FBI ones in or on RR maybe in facy NYC PO-PO because earlier I heard them in Manhattan...have to admit this device is really amazing!!!!
