Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

What is the big difference between the QT40 & QT60 other than output power?

Is it worth the price?

Thanks!

I’d recommend either. AM/FM/SSB with integrated NRC is todays performance minimum.

Appearance as a function of appeal is main QT40 attribute.

Both have menus accessed by panel buttons.

I have the Anytone AT5555-N2 which is the QT60 in all but name.

You’ll need to read operator manuals side-by-side to appreciate differences in controlling/modifying functions.

Dimensions may differ. QT40 doesn’t need a 4-pin mic adapter, but good luck finding anyone who agrees that dynamic mics sound better than the one provided. (I tested my usual dozen).

QT40 maybe looks less valuable (stealth aspect), but, it’s not easier to operate than QT60 even though it has the Uniden 78 / Cobra 29 appearance.

I operate mine at speed. I’m on 27.185 almost constantly. I find the meter & readout to be what I want for info to tell me about what I’m hearing, not just the somewhat better logic on how to control (opinion) vs QT40.

Most functions will be set before taking a drive after dialing in the rest of the rig. Some experience — including on-air feedback while at speed — tells one what’s wanted.

For example, I prefer NRC-RX at (3). NRC-TX at (1). They aren’t something I need to adjust while underway.

Same for Mic Gain, same for most Menu functions.

Are the ones in use intermittently during the day. The last, least (maybe not at all days at a time). From pre-dawn to post-sunset.

That big display Auto-dims such that the daily 2X procedure of dim/bright is removed.

Every radio has a bit of a learning curve. Either of these fits the performance requirement (AM/FM/SSB w/ Integrated NRC), so $$ spent won’t much matter a few months from now.

GALAXY 959 is what I was running immediately prior. FCC CB, but with enough outboard devices plus an align & tune that this portion of the radio rig was easily double the radios in question.

On AM it’s better in sound to those receiving, and the RX gives up nothing. On SSB it’s not in the same ballpark.

It’s larger and heavier than the two above.

I’ve had to replace one control (shaft warp) before a year was out.

I know of some in constant service a decade, and even two decades. This is the only real question about latest radios.

The latest radios are not as pleasant to which to listen as the older ones. The DRX-901 is a very strong recommendation ($60?).

This offsets the price of adding a DRX-656 mic to one of the new radios. ($60?)

I run a BC-45 electret on my Q5-N2 as I don’t need channel changing buttons while underway and I frankly like it’s “feel” (ergo) a bit better than OEM. It’s possibly slightly better. (Needs FJ45 adaptor for 4-pin on QT60).

In mobile one needs a backup mic. This, or another OEM.

There are men running power mics with the new radios to give them the punch older radios had. I find that chasing SNR problems to be a better path as one’s voice then arises from a background of dead silence. On this am I questioned more than any other aspect as the radio rig doesn’t sound like a typical hot-rodded CB. I come thru “strongly”, just in a different sort of way.

This is first step in SNR to accompany best antenna / best mount location plus best installation.

DRX-901 Speaker + CMC Choke linked not optional, IMO.

This post is meant as context to answering the what/why.

Great new radio, biggest thing in 50-years. Don’t forget the rest.

The proof is in use under trying conditions:

This is where speaker & CMC choke earn their pay.

One doesn’t give up against on-air content or the bad actors screwing up the travelers channel (AM-19).

They earn their pay as these newest full-feature radios (include PRESIDENT George 2 as top dog) can deal with those who work to deny service to all users. Radio features + best reproduction.

I do this daily for work. High risk. The point at which I “may” be blanked out is down to an hour or so late afternoon on days where Skip is just overwhelming. Versus nearly half the day . . . and I have to start adding SQ and reducing RFG. Losing some of the Distant Early Warning I find vital.

The DX959 or DX99 + W-M DSP Speaker is a fighter (10-years experience), but the edge goes to QT/60 with DRX-901 per my experience.

7’ antenna (5’ minimum) is the other. The greater the range, the easier to “filter” problems to working satisfaction.

Leaving ABQ one morning in the FTL with a 53 up into the pass thru the Rockies kept an associate in range about 9-miles on an alternate channel to range-test. We switched to Sideband and continued out to 25-miles till the two main turns into the mountains.

High performance is what’s wanted, Mobile to Base. Your family, to your home.

Heavy Skip is a worthy adversary. It’ll decline after a while (cyclical), but your need for Best doesn’t ever retreat. It’s a great way to find what you need.

The QT40 or 60 are great choices. Against an expensive performance rig they eclipse it enough such that pleasure in using CB is back up to that of years past despite the problem on-air.
