• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I'm looking at buying a secondhand APX6000 but I've never had/used one or the software. Is the download from Radiotronics fine? Is there a more affordable alternative?

Thanks,

Tim

Even if you buy a secondhand radio? I thought it was only free if you buy a new one from them...

For all the hate MSI gets, they are the only major vendor that now GIVES AWAY their CPS for free. Yes, it is a process- but costs nothing but time. JVC Kenwood, L3H, Tait, Relm/BK- all charge $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ for legitimate programming software.

Agreed. Relm/BK and L3H would be GAME changers for me if they'd just not charge a kidney and your soul for the damn softare.
I'd buy a P800 P25 and an XG-100P in a heartbeat if I could program either.

I was told that BK was loose with the software but it still cost around $300~? I've reached out several times attempting to aquire the software, with the hopes of getting a P800 to do TRUE NAS scanning on P25 without having to 'hack' like you do motorola or harris. I don't want to play any 'stupid games' but would love to get a commercial rig capable of P25 trunked receive only. So, until then, I leave a motorola scanning P25 on the non control frequencies of my local system to listen to 'you get what you get', and use scanners otherwise.

BK RES did not cost me $300 so I'm not sure where you got that quote from. I paid less than half that. I bought mine from a dealer someone recommended on the BK forum here on RR. And NAS on BK is a dream. Nothing to hack, super easy and safe.

I think Motorola gave up trying to charge for it, when it always showed up on various Australian sites right away anyway.

I'm betting they'll eventually go to cloud software or require an active login to unlock the software.

I don't have a ton of M software, but my battery fleet management software won't take the license key unless I login to the online portal first to activate the key for a certain timeframe.

They already have. It's known as Radio Central. The Astro NEXT platform radios that is, APX Next, N series.
Hopefully the CPS option is still there. Before I retired Moto was selling us hard on APXNext, with all the cloud programming stuff etc. However, I told them that the cloud was next to useless for us (and a lot of other areas in the state) because many of the places we go to program radios have very iffy internet access, and what is there is very slow, so we absolutely had to retain the ability to program without access to the internet.

The same is true in a disaster situation; if you have to program radios on the fly and are dependent on the cloud, you're screwed.
