You will hear tons of train traffic in Mentor. You have 2 mainlines (CSX and NS) that run there. Plus, the Collinwood Yardmaster should come in nice and clear.

Here are the channels you will want to monitor:

CSX: 160.860, 160.800, 160.995, 161.520.
NS: 161.250, 161.070, 160.980.

I used to work in Mentor (years ago) and every day at lunch I would drive to the tracks under the 615 bridge with my scanner and watch trains and listen to railroad radio traffic. You will hear stuff, don't worry! The better antenna you have, the more you will hear.

Here's a list of CSX and NS freq.'s you may find helpful

If you only want to hear the trains within a few miles, the stock antenna will work. However, if you want to hear the trains further away or want to hear the crews on their portables, you will need a better antenna. There is no better antenna for monitoring railroads than the Diamond RH77CA. There is a local ham radio store in Euclid or Willoughby called AES (Amatuer Electronic Supply) that has them in stock. The guys at that store are very knowledgeable and friendly. You will notice a huge improvement on the railroad channels with this antenna. It is also excellent for aircraft and VHF-Hi band monitoring as well.
